    Despite the floods, cereal prices remained stable in July and August. Wheat and wheat flour prices have risen in September in major markets of affected areas; The worst floods in history have hit Pakistan in July causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis where extensive damages were caused to livelihoods, agriculture, livestock and infrastructure; Approximately 10 million people are in need of livelihood assistance, food aid and shelter; Agencies estimate a severe food security situation an d an alarming hunger problem in the long term; Government is supporting the flood affected population with the help of international agencies through emergency interventions.

    Staple food prices have registered a sharp decrease in recent months in local markets mainly thanks to good harvests. The political situation is not critical and the country is slowly recovering from the floods which caused extensive losses and damages between July and September. Food security conditions are estimated to be generally good throughout the country, however IFPRI Hunger Index depicts an alarming hunger problem. The government is procuring grain through the National Securit y Reserve Management Company to build up stocks.

    Access to food is negatively affected by high prices and inflation rates; The election process is underway and political tension continues. A violent storm has caused extensive damage to crops; According to different agencies, in the short term the country faces localized food insecurity which will scale up to a serious hunger problem in the longer term; WFP in partnership with the Government supported vulnerable groups with food transfers.
