Synopsis (short abstract) Access to food is negatively affected by high prices and inflation rates; The election process is underway and political tension continues. A violent storm has caused extensive damage to crops; According to different agencies, in the short term the country faces localized food insecurity which will scale up to a serious hunger problem in the longer term; WFP in partnership with the Government supported vulnerable groups with food transfers.

    Food access remains difficult because of high prices in local markets; Insecurity in the country continues due to the on-going conflict in Somalia which alos results in widespread displacement of people in Kenya; Agencies report seriously high food insecurity in the long term with an estimated 1.6 million people currently requiring food assistance; The government is supporting production with inputs and assisting the most vulnerable through a social protection programme to address hunger.

    Prices of rice and maize have shown a stable trend in recent months, while red beans prices increased due to loss in production caused by heavy rains; Landslides and floods that followed tropical storm Agatha caused widespread damage; Food security was negatively affected by floods, however agencies estimate a moderate hunger problem in the long term; The government is assisting the population to recover from the damages caused by floods also through the distribution of inputs.

    Recent good 'kremti' rains have benefited the 2010 main season cereal crops. Late but good rains have improved the prospect of a good harvest, but the country remains vulnerable due to low productivity and erratic rainfall. Different agencies project very hig and extremely alarming levels of food insecurity. The Government aims at improving food security by increasing production and securing food reserves.
