Synopsis (short abstract) The outbreak of the war in Ukraine on 24 February 2022 is significantly impacting rural livelihoods and food value chains at the national and global levels. In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is deploying its technical capacities and scaling up its emergency interventions to support the Government of Ukraine in protecting rural livelihoods and enhancing the resilience of agrifood systems. In support of FAO’s response and national strategic priorities, the Government of Germany through the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture is generously supporting three projects implemented by FAO in Ukraine. This document presents a summary of the objectives and expected outputs of the three projects.

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has conducted a nation-wide rural household survey in Ukraine, targeting 5,230 rural households across the country, with the objectives of: i) collecting necessary evidence on the impact of the war on rural livelihoods to inform programming decisions and support advocacy efforts; and ii) complementing the data from consolidated and ongoing analyses, including sectoral damage and loss assessments. The analysis is part of a series of complementary assessments that aim at providing a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the war on Ukraine’s agriculture sector and identifying possible programming and policy responses.

    Ukraine: Belgium's contribution through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) 2024

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to provide lifesaving assistance to war-affected rural communities in Ukraine to enable them to secure spring and winter harvests and meet their basic needs. In support of FAO’s emergency response, the Government of Belgium, through the FAO Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, contributed USD 900 000 to support over 700 rural famillies in Chernihivska, Dnipropetrovska, Kharkivska and Sumska oblasts. FAO provided beneficiary households with soybean seeds to contribute to protecting their livelihoods and enable them to maintain food production. This document provides a brief description of the context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of the affected communities.

    In 2022, the West Africa and Sahel region experienced one of the worst years in recent history in terms of humanitarian impacts from floods. The growing frequency, intensity and gravity of climate and weather-related disasters, including floods, are jeopardizing the region’s entire food system and particularly the agriculture sector. Combined with other shocks and risks affecting the region, a new risk of flooding for 2023 may further impact people and their livelihoods. Thanks to the German Federal Foreign Office’s contribution to the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities – Anticipatory Action window, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is scaling up early warning messaging and risk awareness, and safeguarding crops and livestock, to mitigate the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities’ livelihoods and food security.
