Synopsis (short abstract) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to provide lifesaving assistance to war-affected rural communities in Ukraine to enable them to secure spring and winter harvests and meet their basic needs. In support of FAO’s emergency response, the Government of Belgium, through the FAO Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, contributed USD 900 000 to support over 700 rural famillies in Chernihivska, Dnipropetrovska, Kharkivska and Sumska oblasts. FAO provided beneficiary households with soybean seeds to contribute to protecting their livelihoods and enable them to maintain food production. This document provides a brief description of the context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of the affected communities.

    Zambia is experiencing a severe El Niño-induced drought that has resulted in reduced agricultural production, water scarcity and crop failure. So far, 1.8 million smallholder farmers have been significantly impacted. To mitigate the negative effects of the drought on food security, nutrition and livelihoods, while strengthening household food production in rural communities, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has received a contribution of USD 400 000 from the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities. This support will enable FAO to increase the production capacity of 1 040 drought-affected farming households (6 240 people) by providing agricultural inputs, including maize, soybean, common bean and cowpea seeds, and fertilizers. Additionally, the project will promote irrigated crop production using existing and new irrigation facilities, where possible, and support crop growth in wetlands through solar irrigation, depending on agro‑ecological zones and access to water.

    The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is facing a socioeconomic crisis that continues to drive food insecurity, leaving 4.4 million people in rural and disaster-prone areas in need of food assistance. The state of Zulia is among the hardest hit by this complex humanitarian emergency, and the current La Niña cycle could make the situation worse. To mitigate these effects, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO to implement anticipatory actions that will benefit 1 667 households (7 786 people).

    For more than two decades, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s northeastern Ituri province has been facing a severe humanitarian crisis marked by violent attacks perpetrated by non-state armed groups, triggering massive population displacements. In addition, many communities are affected by natural hazards, such as floods, landslides and drought, exacerbating their vulnerabilities and leading to increased levels of food insecurity. According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis (October 2024), over 1.5 million people in Ituri are acutely food insecure (IPC Phase 3 or above). Alarmingly, 61 percent of those in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) are internally displaced people, who previously relied on agriculture for household consumption and income. About 82 percent of displaced people reside with host families, putting additional pressure on them given already limited resources.The Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to provide vulnerable households with timely, lifesaving food production and livelihoods assistance in Ituri. This will help them meet their most immediate needs while creating the conditions to strengthen their resilience.
