    Ethnobotanical survey of less-known indigenous edible tree Diospyros mespiliformis (Ebenaceae) in Benin, West Africa

    African ebony (Diospyros mespiliformis) is a priority indigenous fruit tree that has several uses but its use pattern and conservation are little documented across various ethnic groups in Benin. These surveys carried out in 2018 aimed at provide a critical appraisal of the existing knowledge on the ethno-botanical value of these resources among 317 registered informants. Data on socio demographic characteristics and uses of these plant resources was collected based on oral interview using Kobo Collect tool and a well-structured questionnaire from 11 ethnic groups. Quantitative analysis techniques including Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), Hierarchical Clustering (HCPC) and beta-regression (beta-reg)) were performed to evaluaterelative usefulness of different tree organs and the extent to which quantitative indexes give similar results. Results revealed three clusters with diverse uses of D. mespiliformis. The main uses categories of African ebony were food-fodder, medicinal, construction and magico-religious. The results showed also significant difference in use between ethnic groups, generations and socio-professional categories (P < 0.05). However, gender, religion and educational background of informants were not a determinant of local knowledge (P > 0.05). In addition, diseases treated with D. mespiliformis werefever, dressing wound, malaria and infertility. Our findings suggest that local availability of D. mespiliformis should prioritize the fruit and the wood which are the most valued parts of the plant. In order to fully explore the plant’s potential, this resource needs development of integrated cultivation approach, safety evaluation and detailed ethno-pharmacological studies because it is not excluded that interesting medicinal properties setting in light by research permit to finalize new drug.     Propagation and growth from seeds and root segment cuttings of fruit tree-plus Diospyros mespiliformis (Ebenaceae) in Benin West Africa

    The aim of the present experiment was to assess effectiveness of selected propagation methods, early nursery and field performance of D. mespiliformis (Ebenaceae). For instance, effects of seed pretreatment/root segment cuttings diameter, provenance and soil types on germination and growth vigor of the species was investigated using 144 seeds/root segment; laid in 500 g of three different soil types and soaked/planted in polyethylene bags replicated four times in three treatments and laid in 4×3×3 factorial Completely Randomized Design. Emergence of radicle (days), Seedlings/Shoot Height (cm), number of leaves, and Percentage survival were recorded two weekly for a period of 7 months. Time to event seed germination/shooting data analysis, ANOVA two ways and Generalized Mixed effects Model were used to assess effects of origin, pre treatment/diameter and soil types on germination, shooting and growth of Diospyros mespiliformis. Results indicated that propagation of the species can best be done through seeds and root cuttings. The essay revealed that seeds from woodland, savannah and parkland, sowed in compost and clay and pre treated (boiled water, tegument removed) had the highest germination percentage (69.9-86.67 %), while seeds in the control (no treatment, Inundated Forest and sandy) had very low germination of 17-35 %. No seed treatment showed deficiency in the survival and germination of the seeds of Diospyros mespiliformis, while borehole water aided the survival and bring back early (rapid) germination. Regarding RSC, leafy shoots formed percentage varied from 0 % in river sand to 64.6% in clay and compost substrate after 12 weeks. Results reveal also that among the three classes of diameter, shooting height decreases from clay to sandy while the same variable move in inverse order regarding RSC origin.     The use of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to assess urban forests dynamics in West Africa: A case study of Mbao Classified Forest, Dakar (Senegal)

    Mbao Classified Forest is the largest urban forest in Dakar. It covers an area of 720 hectares and is the most important green lung of the city. This forest plays a key role in terms of carbon storage and sequestration, air pollution removal, and more generally in ecosystem services provision. Hence it is urgent to monitor the dynamic of this forest over the past twenty years (1998-2018) because a lot of infrastructures including a water pumping station and a highway were established inside during this period. These installations make it subject to encroachments and the risk of depletion that could compromise its existence. The aim of this this paper is to assess urban forest dynamics using artificial intelligence and vegetation indices. To achieve this goal the first step is to perform a forest inventory. We opted for a sampling rate of 0.5%. The area of a plot in the i-Tree Eco inventory is 391 m2 with a radius of 11.16 m, which resulted in a total number of 90 plots. The variables measured for each tree are D.B.H, total height, crown width. The allometric equations were used to compute the above-ground biomass. The NDVI of every plot was computed from Landsat datasets followed by the development of a linear regression model with NDVI as the independent variable and biomass as the dependent variable. Landsat imagery enables the NDVI computation of each plot during the twenty past years and using the regression model, the biomass was determined over this period. Our results provide a sound basis to advocate the safeguarding of Mbao Classified Forest. Keywords: Urban forest, biomass, NDVI, inventory. ID: 3621874
