The scale and scope of the humanitarian crisis has far surpassed expectations and projections for 2018 are alarming. Lives are at stake. It is thus essential to continue responding to the immediate needs of the most vulnerable populations while focusing on long-term development solutions. For the huge number of displaced and returnee families in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, agriculture is the only sector that simultaneously provides income, food and dignity.

The protracted crisis coupled with the most severe drought in decades has resulted in persisting food insecurity along with reduced agricultural production in the Syrian Arab Republic in 2018. Internally displaced people, returnees and host communities are facing large food consumption gaps, depleted coping strategies and a large food expenditure share. As food insecurity levels are expected to remain high, strengthening agricultural production is essential to ensure availability and access to food. FAO requires USD 120 million to assist 3.5 million people during from January to December 2019.

The current humanitarian situation in Myanmar represents protracted displacement, human- and natural-induced crises, statelessness, limited access to food, health and livelihood opportunities, limited humanitarian access, landmines and explosive remnants. In Rakhine State, the situation remains tense with inter-communal tensions reported in some areas, particularly affecting women and children. In Kachin and Shan states, the escalation of armed conflict induced new and secondary displacements. To rebuild agricultural livelihoods affected by human-induced crises and natural disasters, FAO requires USD 7.5 million to assist 143 000 people from January to December 2019.
