Synopsis (short abstract) The Sudan continues to suffer from one of the world’s largest protracted humanitarian crises, with the situation deteriorating significantly in 2020 due to widespread floods, civil unrest and conflict. These factors combined with the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and related urgent and essential containment measures have led to increased food prices, disrupted the livelihoods of vulnerable households and aggravated food insecurity. Rehabilitating irrigation systems, and providing agricultural seeds and tools, as well as livestock, fishery and forestry support are crucial to allow flood-affected households to quickly resume production activities.

    A combination of severe flooding, dry spells, insecurity, disease and pests, the economic crisis, the effects of COVID-19, limited access to basic services and the cumulative effects of prolonged asset depletion and loss of livelihoods continues to drive food insecurity across South Sudan. Without immediate and unrestricted humanitarian assistance to curb the severity and spread of the food crisis, over 7 million people – more than half of South Sudan’s population – are likely to slip into crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity at the height of the lean season, from April to July 2021.

    The situation in Colombia continues to be characterized by armed group activity as well as natural disasters, leading to increased humanitarian needs. In addition, Colombia still hosts the largest number of Venezuelan refugees and migrants, whose already dire living conditions have further been aggravated by the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and related urgent and essential restrictive measures. Providing both vulnerable host communities, and refugee and migrant populations, especially in rural areas, with agricultural support is crucial to allow them to quickly cover their food needs and increase their self-reliance.

    Continued conflict, the blockade of the oil sector for most of 2020, and the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic have further debilitated the already weak economic situation in Libya. FAO is requesting USD 2.65 million to assist 12 300 people to support household food security, protect their livelihoods, and restore agricultural productivity, which is crucial to longer-term food security and sustainability, and building communal and national resilience against future shocks.
