General information on the development and ecology of insects and mites is presented, together with advice on the collection, examination and preservation of specimens. The four main pest types (Necrobia rufipes, Dermestes spp., Lardoglyphus spp. and Diptera) are illustrated, with notes on their scientific and common names, appearance, life-cycles an d ecology. Notes are also given on the damage these pests can cause to cured fish, and on ecological factors relevant to pest control and loss reduction. A selected bibliography is given for further reading.

The approach is demonstrated on one of the projects implemented in the region.
