Synopsis (short abstract) This discussion paper identifies key trends and patterns in food markets across selected IOC member states focusing on assessing the linkage between trade promotion and food security. Challenges are constraints involved in improving nutrition standards through trade are highlighted alongside windows of opportunity for future collaboration between the two thematic areas, i.e. the fisheries sector. The brief is concluded with major recommendations for action moving forward.

    The Regional Workshop on Safety at Sea in Artisanal and Small-scale Fisheries in the South West Indian Ocean was held in Moroni, Union of the Comoros, from 12 to 14 December 2006. Forty-one experts from the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) region including an expert from Sweden and representatives of FAO participated. The workshop was organized and implemented by the Fishing Technology Service of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, in close collaboration with the FAO Subregiona l Office for Southern Africa. During the workshop, the results of the Study on safety at sea in artisanal and smallscale fisheries in the South West Indian Ocean, conducted in May 2006, were presented. In addition, seven experts from SWIOFC member States made presentations and took up matters affecting safety at sea in their countries. Experts from Grenada, Sweden and FAO made presentations on global and regional aspects of safety at sea that enriched the information provided to the delegates. The information presented was debated in four working groups on different themes covering fishing operations, data collection, legal framework and technology.

    Food Security and Managing Wheat Imports in Arab Countries

    Arab countries face a number of food security risks due to their high dependence on wheat imports. This study explores ways in which countries can mitigate these risks. The authors evaluate the wheatimport supply chain (WISC) from the unloading port to bulk storage at the flour mill, before the wheat is milled into flour. Existing literature treats isolated topics related to the supply chain, such as strategic storage and the use of financial instruments. This study is unique in that it takes a holistic view of the supply chain by examining how strategic storage, logistics improvements, and procurement strategies can all be used to improve food security.
