    The 2023 annual meeting of the ICES-FAO Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour (WGFTFB) and the International Symposium on “Innovations in Fishing Technologies for Sustainable and Resilient Fisheries” was held from 13 to 17 February 2023 in Kochi, India. The symposium was hosted by FAO in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, organized by the Bay of Bengal Programme Intergovernmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO) and National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Fisheries Institutes and State Fisheries Universities. The symposium brought together 325 participants comprising of scientists, researchers, officials, policymakers, diplomats, industry, entrepreneurs, and students from 32 countries both online and offline delivering a total of 137 presentations providing a platform for discussions on the challenges facing world fisheries including depleted fish stocks, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, fish loss and wastage bycatch, and ghost fishing. This report summarizes the symposium on “Innovations in Fishing Technologies for Sustainable and Resilient Fisheries” which comprised of eight thematic sessions: (i) active gears (ii) passive gears (iii)indicators (iv) abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) (v) survival/behaviour/physiology (vi) energy efficiency (vii) general topics and (viii) gear design.

    The 20th Session of the Sub-Committee on Fish Trade (COFI:FT), held virtually from 8 to 12 September 2025, convened COFI Members and observers. Participants reviewed global fisheries and aquaculture trends and emphasized the need for sustainable aquaculture, responsible capture fisheries, more substantial efforts to address illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and broader ratification of relevant international instruments. The Sub-Committee welcomed FAO’s work on food safety and quality, loss and waste reduction, and traceability, and underscored support for small-scale fisheries and aquaculture regarding market access, the Blue Ports Initiative, and the development of the FAO Voluntary Guidance on Social Responsibility in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Value Chains. La vingtième session du Sous-Comité du commerce du poisson du Comité des pêches, qui a eu lieu par visioconférence du 8 au 12 septembre 2025, a réuni ses membres et les observateurs. Les participants ont examiné les tendances mondiales de la pêche et de l’aquaculture et souligné la nécessité de promouvoir l’aquaculture durable, la pêche responsable, des efforts plus substantiels pour lutter contre la pêche illicite, non déclarée et non réglementée, ainsi que la ratification plus large des instruments internationaux pertinents. Le Sous-Comité a salué les travaux de la FAO sur la sécurité sanitaire et la qualité des aliments, la réduction des pertes et du gaspillage, et la traçabilité, et a mis en avant le soutien à la pêche et à l’aquaculture artisanales en matière d’accès aux marchés, l’Initiative sur les ports bleus et l’élaboration de directives volontaires de la FAO sur la responsabilité sociale dans la filière de la pêche et de l’aquaculture. La 20.ª reunión del Subcomité sobre Comercio Pesquero (COFI:FT), celebrada de manera virtual del 8 al 12 de septiembre de 2025, reunió a los miembros del COFI y a los observadores. Los participantes examinaron las tendencias mundiales de la pesca y la acuicultura y destacaron la necesidad de promover la acuicultura sostenible, la pesca responsable, esfuerzos más sustanciales para combatir la pesca ilegal, no declarada y no reglamentada (INDNR) y una ratificación más amplia de los instrumentos internacionales pertinentes. El Subcomité acogió con satisfacción la labor de la FAO en materia de inocuidad y calidad de los alimentos, reducción de pérdidas y desperdicios, y trazabilidad, y subrayó el apoyo a la pesca y la acuicultura en pequeña escala en lo relativo al acceso a los mercados, la Iniciativa puertos azules y la elaboración en curso de las orientaciones voluntarias de la FAO sobre responsabilidad social en las cadenas de valor de la pesca y la acuicultura.
