Stock assessment for the horse mackerel, Trachurus indicus, caught by purse seine and trawl in the Gulf of Suez 1984

This report describes an assessment of the horse mackerel stock based on catch sampling undertaken during the three seasons from 1979/80 (incl.). Spawning is shown to occur from January through May in each year; and first sexual maturity to occur during the year prior to age 3 years. The recruitment of young fish is concluded as taking place between seasons. Yield per recruit analyses indicate that increases above the contemporary levels of fishing effort would be associated with negligible addi tional catch, and possibly reduced catches; while substantial reductions in fishing effort would be associated with only small consequential decreases in catch. Reduction in the duration of the fishing season, while maintaining fishing efforts constant, are shown likely to be associated with little change in catch.

Stock assessment for the rock lobster Panulirus homarus inhabiting the coastal waters of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen 1984

The report provides an assessment based principally on the sampling of catches at the Mukalla Cold Store and associated landing sites during the three seasons from and including 1980/81. Cohort identities were established using the method of Bhattacharya. Spawning was concluded as occurring twice each year; in the month prior to February and again sometime between May and October. Yield per recruit analyses indicated that modest increases in annual catch would result from increasing the fishing mortality coefficient. To the extent of 6% more catch if the fishing mortality coefficient was increased by 25%; and 13% if the latter was increased by 67%. It was suggested that management action to seek these increases in annual catch might not be justified, particularly if associated with the introduction of substantial additional costs. In respect to the adjacent: fisheries for lobster, that: associated with the Thabut Cold Store was considered near to being fully exploited, while substantia l additional catch was suggested as possible from the fishery at Socotra.

An incomes and costs study of the Egyptian trawl fishery operated in the Gulf of Suez and off the Southern Red Sea coast during 1980-81 1983
    Also available in:

The incomes and costs of the Egyptian trawl fleet operated in the Gulf of Suez and off the southern Red Sea coast during 1980-81 are described in this report. A principal source of data arose from interviews with the boat owners and/or skippers of eighteen boats. Some aspects of the management were discussed. The importance of shrimps and lizard fish, which represented respectively 33% and 44% of the gross value of the catch, was noted.
