In the Southern Hemisphere, the 2002 season has drawn to a conclusion and preparations for the 2003 season are underway. FAO’s forecast for paddy production in 2002 now stands at 588 million tonnes (393 million tonnes milled equivalent), over 6 million tonnes less than earlier anticipated and nearly 9 million tonnes below last season’s rev ised outcome.

No results found.FAO has raised its estimates of 2001 global paddy production to 591.1 million tonnes (395.3 million tonnes, in milled equivalent), mainly on account of upward adjustments in Bangladesh and Thailand. At that level, the season would end 7 million tonnes below the output gathered in 2000, with much of the drop concentrated in Asia. Based on current figures, Australia, Bangladesh, India and the United States experienced large increases in production, while Brazil, Mainland China, Egypt, Indo nesia, Japan, Pakistan and Vietnam recorded sizeable declines. -

No results found.Global paddy output for 2002 is now forecast at 589 million tonnes, up 2 million tonnes from the previous estimate, but still 4 million tonnes lower than the 2001 figure. The improved production outlook partly reflects upward revisions for some Asian countries, following expectations of a timely arrival of monsoon rains and of a less disruptive El Niño than originally foreseen.
