    Owing to their small size, position in tropical cyclone belts and dependence on agriculture and tourism, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean are particularly vulnerable to climate change and its effects. The agrifood systems of these countries require adaptive measures to support resilience to climate change and sustainability to ensure food and nutrition security and to reduce the impacts of climate change on vulnerable groups, including women and Indigenous Peoples. This project was designed to support efforts to increase adaptive measures in targeted SIDS (Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname) by building national capacities to develop concept notes and full proposals for gender sensitive climate adaptation projects, so that these countries can access climate and environmental financing through the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).

    Saint Lucia is a Small Island Developing State in the Caribbean. Increasingly prevalent and intense hurricanes have provided tangible evidence of Caribbean fisheries exposure to environmental shocks in recent years. However, slower climate-change-related processes also require due attention. Promoting the efficiency of fisheries operations and their associated value chains can improve their climate change resilience while reducing stakeholders’ future socio-economic costs. Reducing operating and transaction costs promotes profitability and socio-economic resilience. Climate change resilience of fisheries duly considers the critical environmental efficiency related to capturing target species through methods that minimize unwanted effects upon bycatch species and the broader ecosystem. This publication proposes nationally tailored efficiency and climate-resilience-promoting interventions.

    The Caribbean region is already experiencing some obvious impacts of climate change, including coral bleaching, increasing frequency of high-intensity storms and hurricanes, increased sea level, and sargassum influxes, which are disrupting fishing operations, fish landings, and fisher livelihoods. The seven countries participating in the project – Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago – are highly dependent on the fisheries sector for food security, livelihoods, and household income. Coastal communities and fisherfolk (men and women involved in all aspects of the sector) are considered to be particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In addition to the threats of climate change, the fisheries sector is already suffering from other pressures such as overfishing, loss of habitat, pollution, disturbance of coral reefs, and invasive species, with climate change further exacerbating these problems. Against this background, the project aimed to increase resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts in the fisheries sector in the seven target countries, through the introduction of adaptation measures in fisheries management and capacity building of fisherfolk and aquaculturists.
