Synopsis (short abstract) The overall objective of the Round Table Meeting (RTM) series is to promote awareness and deepen the understanding of the implications of the WTO multilateral trading system on the agriculture and fisheries sector and, in particular on agricultural and food trade in the region. This was the twelfth in a series of meetings organized by FAO on this subject since 1998. For this year, the focus was on briefing decision and policy makers in Agriculture and Fisheries on the WTO related issues with mor e emphasis on PICTA, PACER Plus and similar regional trade agreements and the importance of these issues to the Pacific and how decisions taken may affect the overall development of agriculture and fisheries in the region.

    The Ninth Round Table Meeting (9th RTM) for Pacific Island Countries (PICs) on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Regional Trade Agreements and Provisions was held at the Portland Hotel in Thorndon, Wellington, New Zealand from 3-7 July 2006. The meeting was attended by participants from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Resource persons and speakers for the meeting were provided by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the Government of New Zealand, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC). Representatives of the Government of Italy, the European Commission and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) also attended. The full list of participants and resource persons is attached as Annex 1.

    Farmers’ Rights under the International Treaty is the fifth in a series of educational modules being developed under the coordination of the Secretariat of the International Treaty to strengthen capacities for the effective implementation of the International Treaty among its stakeholder groups. The work on these training materials was officially welcomed by the Governing Body of the International Treaty at its fourth session. The educational modules are aimed at all stakeholder groups of the International Treaty, including policy makers and their staff, civil servants, gene bank staff, plant breeders, farmers’ organizations and other civil society organizations. They are also designed as information and awareness raising materials for the use of media, academia, prospective donors and other interested institutions.
