No results found.This paper has been prepared by FAO to inform the current discussions on bioeconomy including in the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB). It focuses specifically on how bioeconomy can ensure food security and nutrition and, at the same time, on the need to transform agrifood systems to advance the sustainable development of the bioeconomy.Global coordination and cooperation are an integral part of sustainable bioeconomy development. There is a need to implement agreed principles, criteria and monitoring systems that jointly address all dimensions of sustainability, to balance the trade-offs that can lead to the unsustainable implementation of the bioeconomy. Multilateral institutions have an important role to play in tailoring these sustainable bioeconomy tools and guidelines in different contexts globally, while providing a neutral platform where all countries and stakeholders have a central role in shaping the future bioeconomy. In this context the paper also contributes to the discussions around a set of High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy at the GIB. It presents an overview of FAO’s work on bioeconomy, resources and networks, and provides lessons learned and recommendations for both G20 Members and globally. -

FAO’s work in Europe and Central Asia and throughout the world is guided by the FAO Strategic Framework, reviewed every four years. In its support for the 2030 Agenda and its drive for a transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, the new FAO Strategic Framework 2022–2031 focuses on what are called the four betters – a set of goals that, when implemented, will help ensure that no one is left behind. Food systems and agriculture are at a crossroads and a profound transformation is needed at all scales, not only to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2) to “end hunger and all forms of malnutrition” by 2030 but also to address Agenda 2030 in its entirety, including human and environmental health, climate change, equity and social stability. Current trends, such as the new increase, since 2014, in the number of undernourished people and the alarming rate of all forms of malnutrition in all countries, and related tensions will be exacerbated if we fail to design and implement, in a very near future, food systems that ensure food security and nutrition while addressing all sustainability challenges. Agroecological and other innovative approaches in agriculture are increasingly praised for their potential contribution to reach these crucial goals. This report adopts a dynamic perspective, centred on the key concepts of transition and transformation. Ultimately, this rich and comprehensive report aims to fuel an exciting policy convergence process and help remove the lock-ins by developing a common understanding of these matters, so that concrete transition pathways can be implemented at all relevant scales, from farm, community and landscape to national, regional and global levels.
