Synopsis (short abstract) As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. AgriTech is a government initiative that supports innovative proposals along the entire value chain. Examples include smart irrigation systems to maximize crop growth, smart fertilizer application systems, high-tech greenhouses, hydroponic systems, farm robotics to reduce labour use, smart logistics technologies such as food freshness sensors and shelf life enhancement technology for merchandise in transit, and development of marketing systems through apps, websites, and other digital platforms to connect producers and consumers.

    As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. This flyer presents the successful innovation in response to the movement restrictions imposed in response to COVID-19, which have considerably restricted sales and purchase of vegetables and merchandise at the marketplace. A farmer decided to offer a new service to buyers by selling a basket of different types of food at a fixed price and delivering them direct to households.

    As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. Many Pacific Islands rely on imported foods, which often negatively impact the health and nutrition of the local population and which increase the occurence of obesity, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. This flyer describes the production of flour from breadfruit, banana, taro and cassava, that can be consumed locally or exported. The producers are exploring possibilities to use the waste from food processing to make coconut wood and produce energy. The initiative is supporting sustainable livelihoods for farmers who had lost their incomes due to the COVID-19 crisis.

The use of digital technologies in the agriculture and fisheries sectors of the Pacific is still in its infancy. As a result, farmers in SIDS, especially those in remote locations, have difficulties accessing actors along the value chain and in international markets. This flyer presents a platform for agriculture value chain stakeholders to connect with one another, and access information as well as simple digital tools for improved farm management.
