Synopsis (short abstract) In Burkina Faso, persistent insecurity, climate change and economic constraints are directly affecting the livelihoods and living conditions of millions of people. This is forcing populations, particularly internally displaced people, to adopt negative coping mechanisms. It is therefore urgent to provide agricultural assistance to the most vulnerable households to enable them to quickly produce food to meet their basic needs and strengthen their resilience.

    In Burkina Faso, over 16 percent of the population is expected to be in high acute food insecurity during this year’s lean season, if appropriate assistance isn’t provided. This will include, for the first time, 19 867 people in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5). Around 4 in 5 people rely on agriculture for subsistence, and need urgent support to restore food production. Every USD 1 spent on supporting farmers with a vegetable production package yields over 20 times its value in cabbages, onions and tomatoes.

Humanitarian needs continue to escalate at a staggering rate, with one in two people acutely food insecure. Famine has been declared in North Darfur and the Western Nuba mountains, as conflict, economic collapse and climate shocks push entire communities to the brink of catastrophe. Emergency agricultural assistance to boost local food production and availability is an urgent humanitarian priority, critical to preventing further hunger and suffering.
