Synopsis (short abstract) The Near East and North Africa Region (NENA) faces the challenge of addressing a wide range of complex and intertwined issues associated with the management of natural resources, particularly land and water, and to securing food supply for a growing population. To address these challenges, FAO has launched a regional Initiative on Water Scarcity in the Near East. The overall goal of the initiative is to support Member Countries in streamlining priority areas of action in agriculture water manage ment that can significantly contribute to boosting agriculture productivity, improving food security and sustaining water resources, by highlighting the specific areas that require action and building partnerships to move the process forward.

    This report presents the proceedings of the Regional Collaborate Platform workshop of the Water Scarcity Initiative. It provides a summary of discussions by thematic area covering the 3 key topics of water consumption, crop water productivity, and drought management. One of the main objectives of the workshop was to develop an Operational Work Plan based on the main recommendations made by each country following the discussions addressing the 3 key topics. In this report, the recommendations are made for each country based on their priorities and needs, and constitute the basis for consultations between the relevant institutions on the country level towards the elaboration of a comprehensive national work plan to be implemented into specific actions.

The overall goal of the initiative is to support member countries in identifying and streamlining policies and best practices in agricul ture water management, and beyond, that can significantly contribute to boosting agriculture productivity, improving food security and sustaining water resources. The initiative will identify critical areas that require action, assist in the formulation of a regional collaborative strategy and build broad partnerships to support its implementation.
