This report details some species of fish considered appropriate for stocking the Sepik/Ramu Rivers. Fishes thought suitable for introduction have been divided into three categories: Category A (species whose introduction is recommended); Category B (species that are thought to be of particular interest which are presently being evaluated in detail) ; and, Category C (interesting species with longer-term potential). Only category A species are presently recommended. All other species under consid eration are to be evaluated further by the project before it is prepared to recommend their introduction. Brief details of some of the category B and C species are given in order to illustrate the various options being evaluated.

The purpose of this document is to archive the recommendations of the project to introduce four cyprinid fish species into the Sepik/Ramu catchment for purposes of fish stock enhancement. Coates (1990a) outlined the reasons 1 and justification for stocking the river basin. Coates (1990b and 1991) detailed proposals to stock the basin with four species (two translocated within Papua New Guinea and two new introductions) all of which were lowland, warm water species. The present four species are a ll recommended for tributary rivers at higher altitudes.

This document is a sequel to that of Coates (1990a) that outlined the justification and need for fish stocking in the Sepik/Ramu basin and Coates (1990b) that detailed a limited number of species recommended for introduction for fish stock enhancement purposes. The project has now recommended that the river basin be stocked with the Java Carp, Puntius gonionotus, as an additional species. This document serves to archive this recommendation and details the results of the code of practice regardin g fish species transfers (Turner 1988) as applied to this transfer.
