Between September 2022 and February 2023, about 4.7 million people are projected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity. Economic contraction, sociopolitical instability and worsening insecurity has gradually deteriorated the food security situation in the country. The cholera outbreak is likely to hit vulnerable populations who are already facing food insecurity, and humanitarian assistance is urgently needed to save lives.

Favourable weather, coupled with improved security conditions, led to an upturn in cereal production in 2020. Despite a well-above-average wheat harvest, after accounting for anticipated Government imports and food assistance, an uncovered gap between total availability and utilization is expected during the 2020/21 marketing year (July/June). Ample domestic production of barley is likely to be sufficient to cover domestic feed and seed needs in the 2020/21 marketing year (July/June).

Tropical Cyclone Harold caused widespread damage to the agriculture sector

The passing of Cyclone Harold on 6 April 2020 caused extensive damage to the agriculture sector, including losses of main staples and export crops. About half of the total population is estimated to be in need of assistance due to the impact of the cyclone. International food and agriculture assistance is urgently needed to avoid the deterioration of the local food security situation. COVID-19 prevention measures may hamper the timely delivery of humanitarian aid. Necessary measures need to be taken to avoid this. FAO is working with the Vanuatu authorities to restore agricultural production and rebuild livelihoods.
