No results found.Aquaculture sector in Asia-Pacific has grown rapidly during the past four decades and contributed significantly to food security, nutrition, livelihood and overall socioeconomic development in the region. Meanwhile, disease problem has become increasingly challenging in aquaculture. Un-prudent and poorly controlled use of anti-microbial in animal disease control in aquaculture can have significant contribution to AMR risk. Although the control over the use of antimicrobial in aquaculture through some regulatory frameworks has been strengthened over the past decade in the region, it is far from adequate and effective in many Asian countries. In order to support the members to effectively address AMR in aquaculture for public health and sustainability of the sector, FAO and Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) jointly organized the regional consultation on AMR associated with aquaculture in Asia-Pacific on 4-6 September 2018. This publication documents the conduct of the regional consultation and its outputs, which identified major issues and gaps in tackling AMR issue in aquaculture and recommended desirable interventions and long-term strategy to effective mitigate AMR risk related to aquaculture in the region. The document also includes the seven country case studies on status of use of antimicrobial in aquaculture and the efforts to manage the risks of antimicrobial resistance, which were presented at the regional consultation. -

No results found.The Eighth FAO Expert Advisory Panel for the Assessment of Proposals to Amend Appendices I and II of CITES Concerning Commercially-Exploited Aquatic Species was convened in response to the agreement by the Twenty-Fifth Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) on the Terms of Reference for an expert advisory panel for assessment of proposals to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and following endorsement from the Twenty-Sixth Session of COFI to convene the Expert Panel for relevant proposals to future CITES Conference of the Parties. The objectives of the Expert Panel were to i) assess each proposal from a scientific perspective in accordance with the CITES biological listing criteria (Resolution Conf. 9.24 [Rev. CoP17]); and ii) comment, as appropriate, on technical aspects of the proposal in relation to biology, ecology, trade and management issues, as well as, to the extent possible, the likely effectiveness for conservation. -

2025The Procedural Manual of the Codex Alimentarius Commission helps national delegations and international organizations attending as observers, participate effectively in the work of the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme. It sets out the basic rules of procedure, procedures for the elaboration of Codex standards and related texts, and basic definitions and guidelines for the operation of Codex committees. It also gives the membership of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The 30th edition of the Codex Procedural Manual continues to work towards a harmonization of language, particularly around synonymous terminology, thus setting precedent for Codex’s other written materials. Specifically, this latest edition contains three changes to "Section 4.6: Risk analysis principles applied by the Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods", 1) a revision of "Annex C: Approach for the extrapolation of maximum residue limits for veterinary drugs to one or more species"; 2) the inclusion of "Annex D: Criteria and procedures for the establishment of action levels for residues of veterinary drugs in food of animal origin resulting from unavoidable and unintentional veterinary drug carryover in non-target animal feed"; and 3) a consequential amendment to paragraph 133, Establishment of priority list. In "Section 5.1: Table of committees, document references and terms of reference", following the decision by the Commission to reactivate the Codex Committee on Cereals, Pulses and Legumes, this committee was moved from “commodity committees (adjourned sine die)” to “commodity committees (active)”. Finally, editorial changes have been made to more consistently apply abbreviations and provide more accurate cross-referencing by numbering subsections.
