DocumentOther documentTechnical workshop to support planning for a green bond to mobilize finance for sustainable agriculture in Viet Nam
Hanoi, Viet Nam, 25 March 2025
2025Also available in:
No results found.Viet Nam is working to mobilize finance for sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture aligned with national programmes and priorities, including the One Million Hectares Initiative to scale up high-quality, low-carbon rice production in the Mekong Delta by 2030. Innovative financial instruments such as green bonds offer a promising pathway to scale up investments and target proceeds to smallholder farmers and agri-SMEs for adopting sustainable practices and technologies. This report documents outcomes from a technical workshop hosted by FAO with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in collaboration with the Climate Bonds Initiative and the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to advance Viet Nam’s first green bond for climate-resilient, low-emission agriculture. The event convened government officials, financial experts and development partners to support the green bond framework. Through technical presentations, international case studies and collaborative working sessions, participants identified priority actions for financing smallholder farmers and agri-SMEs, establishing robust monitoring and reporting systems, and enhancing capacity at multiple levels for a successful green bond issuance. The workshop marks a key milestone in Viet Nam’s progress to unlock sustainable finance, foster climate-smart agricultural transformation, and contribute to national and global climate change goals. -
Book (series)Technical studyLeveraging automation and digitalization for precision agriculture: Evidence from the case studies
Background paper for The State of Food and Agriculture 2022
2022Also available in:
No results found.Digital and automation solutions for precision agriculture can improve efficiency, productivity, product quality and sustainability. Nevertheless, barriers to adoption of such solutions – including their cost, lack of knowledge and skills, and the absence of an enabling environment and infrastructure – can prevent producers from realizing these benefits. Building on findings from 22 case studies worldwide, this study finds that national data policies and infrastructure are key enablers of adoption, as is investment in connectivity (e.g. internet) and electricity in rural areas. Further research and information on the economic, environmental and social impacts of the solutions are also needed to provide evidence on their benefits. So too is investment in human capacity development, particularly digital literacy. To ensure an inclusive process, solutions must be adapted across agricultural production systems, regions and farm types. Partnerships and networks for exchanging information and promoting collaboration will key. Finally, awareness raising and communication are important since consumers can be skeptical about food being produced by new technologies. In summary, by focusing on a variety of solutions, this study provides a landscape analysis of digital and automation solutions and offers guidance to accelerate adoption for more inclusive, sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. -

Book (stand-alone)Technical bookGlobal Forest Resources Assessment 2020
Main report
2020FAO completed its first assessment of the world’s forest resources in 1948. At that time, its major objective was to collect information on available timber supply to satisfy post-war reconstruction demand. Since then, the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) has evolved into a comprehensive evaluation of forest resources and their condition, management and uses, covering all the thematic elements of sustainable forest management. This, the latest of these assessments, examines the status of, and trends in, forest resources over the period 1990–2020, drawing on the efforts of hundreds of experts worldwide. The production of FRA 2020 also involved collaboration among many partner organizations, thereby reducing the reporting burden on countries, increasing synergies among reporting processes, and improving data consistency. The results of FRA 2020 are available in several formats, including this report and an online database containing the original inputs of countries and territories as well as desk studies and regional and global analyses prepared by FAO. I invite you to use these materials to support our common journey towards a more sustainable future with forests. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookОбеспечение учета интересов женщин при оказании сельских консультационных услуг: передовая практика ФАО в Европе и Центральной Азии 2025
Also available in:
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookEnsuring that rural advisory services are responsive to women: good practices from FAO experiences in Europe and Central Asia 2024
Also available in:
This report builds upon FAO’s work promoting gender mainstreaming in extension and advisory services, cataloguing challenges and suggesting strategies for increasing the gender responsiveness of rural advisory services globally. The purpose of this review is to apply FAO’s accumulated knowledge about gender equality in the context of rural advisory services to assess the situation in the Europe and Central Asia region. The report provides a snapshot of the extent to which gender considerations are currently integrated into rural advisory services in the region and highlights good practices that are in line with FAO’s gender equality strategies. The report concludes with recommendations for FAO, partner organizations and stakeholders in the fields of agricultural extension and rural advisory services, on how to further improve such services to extend their reach to rural women and men who have previously had limited or no access. This process requires moving away from gender‑neutral service provision, which often results in the exclusion of women, towards transformative extension and rural advisory services that challenge unequal gender relations and address underlying discriminatory norms and practices. -
