Synopsis (short abstract) This report highlights the significance of cocoa production in Trinidad and Tobago under the One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative. Despite contributing less than 1 percent to the nation’s GDP, Trinidad and Tobago is internationally recognized for its premium-quality cocoa. It is one of only eight countries globally certified by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) for 100 percent fine flavor cocoa and is the birthplace of the Trinitario cocoa variety, renowned for its high value in global markets.The cocoa industry faces critical challenges, including low productivity due to small-scale farming, aging tree stock with reduced yields, and limited investment in technology and infrastructure. Furthermore, climate change, with its unpredictable rainfall patterns and increased pest incidence, poses additional threats to sustainable production. Addressing these challenges requires a coordinated effort among stakeholders to modernize practices and enhance resilience.Supported by FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, and the Cocoa Research Centre of the University of the West Indies, this initiative seeks to revitalize Trinidad and Tobago’s cocoa industry. By promoting innovation, improving farm management, and leveraging the nation’s unique heritage in fine flavor cocoa, the program aims to ensure economic viability, preserve biodiversity, and reinforce the country’s position in global cocoa markets.

    Land degradation, including reduction of biodiversity, topsoil loss and other forms of soil degradation continues to be a major environmental concern and issue in Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) including Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). This brings increased climate-related risk and food insecurity which was underscored as a major area of concern by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Nature-based Solutions for Resilient Landscapes in Trinidad and Tobago – BioResilience project will work towards nature-positive development and increased food security in T&T, including nature-based solutions (NbS) that halt current land degradation trends, increase biodiversity and provide resilience to climate change impacts in the long run.

    The Global Action on the Green Development of Special Agricultural Products: One Country, One Priority Product (OCOP) is a five-year initiative launched by the FAO in 2021, aimed at promoting agricultural products with distinct qualities with the potential for sustainable development. The program seeks to enhance the value of these unique products at global, regional, and local levels, helping countries leverage their agricultural heritage while promoting environmentally friendly practices.In Latin America and the Caribbean, 14 countries have been selected to participate in the OCOP initiative. Each nation has chosen a specific agricultural product that reflects its unique cultural and environmental context. The goal is to provide support for the green development of these products, ensuring they meet global sustainability standards and can contribute to the socio-economic development of the regions.This document addresses the situation in Ecuador. The OCOP product is cocoa, a crop of great cultural and economic significance. Ecuador is renowned for its high-quality cocoa, and by focusing on this product, the initiative aims to strengthen sustainable cocoa production practices, increase its global market presence, and improve the livelihoods of local farmers, all while promoting environmental stewardship and climate resilience.

    Improving Forest and Protected Area Management in Trinidad and Tobago - GCP/TRI/003/GFF 2021

    Approximately 60 percent of the land area of Trinidad and Tobago is covered by forests and other wooded land. These areas are crucial to the health of the planet and to the livelihoods of the people who depend on the resources they provide. For these reasons, they have been designated as Protected Areas (PAs). The management of these PAs has been fragmentary in nature, owing to the fact that multiple laws have been established regarding their organization and maintenance. Pressure from various stakeholders has also been placed on PAs, posing a threat to biodiversity and causing degradation. The wildlife population has declined in many of these areas, putting species in both terrestrial and nearby marine ecosystems at risk. This project was designed to build upon existing efforts to prevent biodiversity loss and to make the management of PAs in Trinidad and Tobago more effective. The development of a cohesive PA system and the creation of a related funding mechanism were central goals of the project.
