    Este documento evalúa las cuencas de los ríos Magdalena y Atrato en Colombia, resaltando los desafíos ambientales críticos que enfrentan. La cuenca del Magdalena, con 270 118 km² yabasteciendo al 90 % de la población, sufre una crisis ambiental severa debido a la contaminación de actividades industriales, mineras, agroquímicos y desechos domésticos, lo que degrada el agua y reduce la biodiversidad. Además, la deforestación y el cambio en el uso del suelo afectan negativamente la pesca y los ecosistemas acuáticos. La cuenca del Atrato, de 38 500 km² y caracterizada por su densa cobertura boscosa y baja densidad poblacional, muestra impactos similares, especialmente por la minería y la agricultura, aunque en menor grado. No obstante, esto podría intensificarse sin una gestión adecuada de los recursos. Ambas cuencas, ricas en bosques y ecosistemas acuáticos, comparten desafíos en términos de deforestación y cambio de uso del suelo. Se concluye que estos cambios en la cuenca del Magdalena impactan directamente la pesca y el bienestar de las comunidades ribereñas. Se propone una gestión integrada de recursos que proteja tanto los ecosistemas terrestres como acuáticos para asegurar la sostenibilidad de la pesca, siendo clave la colaboración entre autoridades y comunidades para implementar prácticas sostenibles en ambas cuencas.

    Este articulo presenta el “Programa Regional de Bosques de la Organización del Tratado de Cooperación Amazónica - OTCA para la Cuenca y la Región Amazónica”, formulado y aprobado durante el primer semestre de 2021 por el Grupo Técnico de los ocho Países Miembros (PM) que conforman la organización (Bolivia, Brasil, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, Perú, Surinam y Venezuela). El Programa tiene por objeto promover la conservación y el Manejo Forestal Sostenible (MFS)/Manejo Integral y Sustentable de los Bosques amazónicos a través de acciones de coordinación, cooperación, e implementación entre los países; y desarrollar las capacidades necesarias para acompañar los nuevos requerimientos y plazos de las agendas globales de Bosques y Biodiversidad de los países que integran el Tratado de Cooperación Amazónica. El artículo detalla los alcances del programa, componentes y acciones estratégicas, consideraciones para su implementación, y estructura institucional y operativa. También se destacan acciones inmediatas para su implementación como (i) la puesta en marcha del “Memorandúm de Entendimiento de Cooperación y Asistencia Mutua para el Manejo Integral de Fuego entre los Países Miembros de la OTCA” y la conformación de la “Red Amazónica de Manejo Integral del Fuego”; (ii) la formulación conceptual de un Módulo Forestal para el Observatorio Regional Amazónico: y (iii) la implementación de la “Plataforma Tecnológica” para la difusión de herramientas o procesos tecnológicos que incorporen tecnología e innovación para el MFS. Finalmente, se presentan consideraciones sobre su impacto internacional, regional y nacional.     The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.

    Soil resources constitute the very foundation of agriculture, so sustainable agriculture is inherently dependent on soil health. Soil health reflects the capacity of soil to respond beneficially to agricultural management, maintaining both agricultural production and the provision of varying ecosystem services, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity conservation in the long term. Soil health depends on the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the soil that are required for plant growth and development. Ecological intensification differs from current strategies for agricultural intensification by embracing agroecological transitions to more sustainable agriculture and food systems. This chapter discusses the pivotal role that trees play in building and maintaining the soil health and functional resilience that are required for the ecological intensification of agriculture. It summarizes the current knowledge about functions and impacts of trees on soil health, and highlights the tree/soil biodiversity interactions that drive these functions.

    The significance of industrial processing for the nature of food and the state of human health - and in particular the techniques and ingredients developed by modern food science and technology - is generally underestimated. This is evident in both national and international policies and strategies designed to improve populations' nutrition and health. Until recently it has also been neglected in epidemiological and experimental studies concerning diet, nutrition and health. This report seeks to assess the impact of ultra-processed food on diet quality and health, based on NOVA, a food classification system developed by researchers at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
