Principles of responsible governance of tenure were integrated into local, national and regional level policies and programmes , ensuring that both the Voluntary Guidelines and the Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa are used to capacitate key stakeholders and secure legitimate tenure rights. Awareness was raised among more than 2 000 people at high level meetings (32 percent of them women), involving more than 30 countries, in an effort to increase the knowledge of policy makers, continental institutions, customary institutions, civil society organizations, farmer organizations and key stakeholders on the importance of using the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) and the Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa (F&G) in an integrated way, to improve governance of tenure. The project also undertook significant capacity development efforts, with 735 change agents (30 percent of them women) comprising policy makers, parliamentarians, traditional authorities, academia, civil society and the private sector forming a critical mass of well capacitated beneficiaries around whom tenure reforms can be woven for sustainable change. A further 4 197 people (31 percent of them women) were reached through the dissemination of knowledge products, including both sets of guidelines and their technical guides. A web based knowledge management platform was successfully developed to provide a one stop access point for information on the transversal and all in country projects, while eight capitalization meetings were held to provide a platform for project implementation teams to exchange the experiences and lessons learned during the project period.

Deforestation, soil erosion, water scarcity, a growing population and an increase in tourism have negatively impacted the natural resource base of Rodrigues Island, an autonomous region of Mauritius Because of this damage, croplands only cover between two and five percent of the island, and pasturelands cover about six percent, which means that yields are low and variable Despite its low level of production, the agriculture sector in Rodrigues is extremely important for the economy In fact, all of the island’s key exports are agricultural or fisheries products, such as cattle, poultry, goats, octopus, honey, chili peppers, red beans and lime In addition to generating revenue through exports, the Rodrigues Regional Assembly ( has highlighted the fact that the agriculture sector holds great potential to be productive enough to feed both residents and visitors of the island and to create employment opportunities for youth.

Strengthening Ecowas Capacities for the Promotion of Productive and Sustainable Agriculture in West Africa - GCP/RAF/461/SPA 2021
    Also available in:

Agriculture is the most crucial sector of the economies of West African countries, as it ensures the food and nutrition security of millions of people. As part of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), adopted in 2003, African heads of state and of government committed to dedicating at least 10 percent of their budgets to agriculture. In this context, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2005 drafted its agricultural policy (ECOWAP), which was aimed at encouraging its member states and supporting them in orienting their commercial and macro economic policies towards the acceleration of agricultural development and the reduction of poverty in the region. The project was designed to support the implementation of the CAADP/ECOWAP, both at regional level, through capacity building for ECOWAS in terms of investment programme /project design and management and resource mobilization, and at national level, with support for the operationalization of the National Agriculture Investment Programme (NAIPs) of selected countries.
