It briefly describes the development of these craft and their introduction on the east coast of India, analyzes their present status and discusses the results. The report was prepared by a consultant with wide experience of fisheries in the Bay of Bengal region, on the basis of documentation on the subproject, published and unpublished, as well as impressions gat hered during field visits to fishing centres in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa during August 1992. ProjectKattumaram Fisheries and Fisherfolk; A Study in Kothapatnam Pallipalem, Andhra Pradesh, India-BOBP/WP/70 1991
Also available in:
No results found. This working paper describes the attempt made to conduct an integrated study of the biological, economic and sociological aspects of the fisheries and fisherfolk that use one of the most traditional and popular fishing craft of the east coast of India kattumaram. The benefits of the results from such an approach are also presented in this report. The paper discusses the significance of using one or more types of fishing gear with such a traditional craft, correlation between income from fishin g and income from other sources and consequent diversity in income categories, relative performance by other types of craft, interactive fishing problems, exploitation of resources, underutilized resources, motorization of traditional craft, marketing practices and improvements and opportunities for additional/alternative income generation. Periodic exchanges of information between the study-group and fisherfolk, in the course of this study, opened the doors to communication with fisherfolk on i ssues concerning resources and management and culminated in the preparation of a series of extension material in this field. This project was carried out in cooperation with the Department of Fisheries, Andhra Pradesh State, India, and was sponsored by a Bayof Bengal Programme (BOBP) project, ‘Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal’ (GCP/RAS/118/MUL). The post-harvest technological investigations were conducted under the direction and supervision of Mr. David Walker, Adviser , ODA. The socio-economic investigations were conducted by Ms. Christina Lundquist, Socio-economist (APO) of the Bay of Bengal Programme. And Messrs P.R. Prathap Kumar and I. Ramaswamy were responsible for painstakingly collecting most of the data included in this report. -
ProjectFishing Trials with Beachlanding Craft at Thirumuilaivasal, Tamil Nadu, India 1989-1991-BOBP/WP/75 - 1992
Also available in:
No results found.Based on the experience gained in small-scale offshore fishing in Uppada, Andhra Pradesh, India (BOBP/WP/56), and the need to diversify and develop smallscale fisheries in the offshore areas off the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu, India, a subproject for the commercial fishing of pelagic species was established in 1989 by the Fisheries Department of Tamil Nadu with technical and financial support from the Bay of Bengal Programme. It was executed in Thirumullaivasal, Thanjavur District, from Febr uary 1989 to January 1991 with one beach landing craft (BLC)of the IND-20 type. A second boat of the same type became available in July 1990. The purpose of the subproject was to demonstrate to fisherfolk and Fisheries Officers the technical and economic feasibility of small-scale offshore fishing by using the BLC and employing diversified fishing gear. It was hoped that the demonstration would lead to commercial exploitation of less exploited resources and produce new sources of earnings for the fisherfolk who own and operate traditional as well as other introduced motorized fishing craft. This paper records the trials over a two-year period and the conclusions drawn from them.
