    The project’s objective was to promote the restoration of degraded landscapes in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of Ukraine by scaling up integrated natural resources management practices. The project was particularly relevant in terms of environmental degradation and climate change, as it took important first steps towards a land degradation neutrality monitoring system and integrated land use management plans in Ukraine, thus contributing to the enhanced integration of environmental policy into governance systems.Despite challenges caused by the ongoing war, the project’s activities and incentives stand out as good practices to replicate. The project significantly implemented successful capacity building, which led to increased information sharing and the development of draft laws on environmental protection. Numerous demonstration and capacity building activities on good conservation agricultural practices and enhanced technologies like no till drill, subsurface drip irrigation, crop rotation and sustainable shelterbelt management generated greater awareness. In addition, promising income generation activities for women were implemented successfully.

    Namibia’s unique Miombo-Mopane Woodland Ecoregion in the Okavango and Kunene basins is of capital importance for the country’s development, especially in the regions of Kavango East and Omusati where these dry forests prevail. At least 600,000 people live in the rural parts of Kavango East, Omusati and Oshikoto provinces that are dominated by Baikiaea, Miombo and Mopane forest. Rural communities rely on naturally resilient ecosystems for food, nutrition, shelter, medicine, fiber and the availability of water – highly valued and vital ecosystem services. These woodlands are threatened throughout their entire distribution, within a sub-region of Southern Africa that includes Namibia. Deforestation, uncontrolled wildfires and unsustainable use of natural resources are increasingly fragmenting and destroying Miombo-Mopane woodlands across the Kunene-Cuvelai and Okavango river basins, all of which originate in Angola, are internationally shared and sustain populations on both sides of the Angola-Namibia border. To initiate a transformational shift towards sustainable, integrated management of multi-use dryland landscapes in northern Namibia, building on Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) principles, Namibia is implementing an integrated landscape management project to reverse degradation and support the sustainable use of natural resources in the Mopane-Miombo belt of northern Namibia under the Sustainable Forest Management Impact Program on Dryland Sustainable Landscapes (SFM-DSL).

    Advancing the role of natural regeneration in large-scale forest and landscape restoration in the Asia-Pacific region

    There are numerous global, regional, national and even subnational targets for increasing forest area and forest restoration. In light of these global targets and emerging ambitious national commitments, it is imperative to develop low-cost strategies and techniques for landscape restoration. The most widely used restoration strategies involving planting of tree seedlings are often costly and their application for restoring vast expanses of degraded forest lands in the region may be limited. Case studies and experiences with natural regeneration from the region have shown that natural regeneration significantly reduces the cost of restoration in areas that meet certain conditions. Native species that are adapted to the prevailing conditions re-establish on their own with some assistance, achieving accelerated growth in accordance with natural succession, leading to the recovery of native ecosystems. Restoration strategies based on natural regeneration also provide low-cost opportunities for conserving biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration and watershed protection. Despite these economic and environmental advantages, natural regeneration is often overlooked when restoration policies and programmes are designed for a number of reasons. These include lack of its recognition as a viable restoration option; perverse incentives favouring clearing of young secondary growth for plantation development or other land uses; lack of institutional support by government agencies and other organizations; unclear tenure and property rights; lack of incentives for local communities; and uncertainty about the restoration processes and outcomes. This publication aims to share information on the outcome of the regional workshop, entitled ‘Promoting the Role of Natural Regeneration in Large-scale Forest and Landscape Restoration: Challenges and Opportunities, held in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China, from 19 to 21 June 2017, which was organized to better understand the challenges and opportunities for natural forest regeneration and to promote its inclusion as a major component of large-scale restoration initiatives.
