Synopsis (short abstract) FISH4ACP is an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) contributing to food and nutrition security, economic prosperity and job creation by ensuring the economic, social and environmental sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture value chains in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. FISH4ACP is implemented by FAO and partners with funding from the European Union.

In the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) fisheries are an important source of animal protein with current annual fish consumption ranging between 10 and 35 kg/capita. However the available figures often fail to account for tourism impacts, which would reduce these per capita consumption levels of fish. The sector also provides livelihoods, particularly in coastal communities. In the CARICOM countries at least 64 000 persons are directly employed in smallscale fisheries and aquacult ure and an estimated 180 000 people are involved in fish processing, retail, boat construction, net repair and other related activities.

Promoting business opportunities for youth and women in inland fisheries and aquaculture food systems in arid areas 2024

This publication is the main outcome of a technical workshop on ‘Market system approach for resilient agri-aquaculture food systems in desert and arid countries’ organized by the FAO sub-regional office for North Africa from 13 to 15 October 2022 in Tunis, Tunisia. The workshop brought together experts from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia as well as FAO staff with the aim of developing a work programme for the development of the sub-sector. The experts discussed and developed three categories of intervention: (i) Expanding market opportunities for freshwater fish; (ii) Improving opportunities to expand freshwater aquaculture and inland fisheries production; (iii) Promoting business opportunities for youth and women in inland fisheries and aquaculture food systems. These programmes concept notes were put together in this business portfolio of investment and are addressed to potential donors seeking to financially support sustainable aquaculture and inland fisheries development in the arid lands of North African countries.

FISH4ACP, an initiative of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (OACPS) that aims to improves the economic, social and environmental sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture value chains in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, supports Nigeria’s efforts to boost the catfish sector because of its potential to create jobs and business opportunities, in particular for women and youth. FISH4CP is implemented by FAO with funding from the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
