    Towards transformation of agricultural landscapes: Determination of agroforestry tree species producing beneficial ecosystem services to local farmers in Nigeria

    The aim of this study is to transform agricultural landscapes through incorporating tree species that produce ecosystem services beneficial to local farmers. To achieve this, the study assessed existing diversity of tree species producing ecosystem services in agricultural farmlands in selected local communities of southwest Nigeria. The information obtained will then be used to design strategy for intensification of agroforestry tree species for transformation of agricultural landscapes. Purposive sampling was employed in selecting 66 local farmers who has personal farmlands. Information on available tree species and their diversification on farmlands were obtained through inventory and field observation. Primary information obtained through questionnaire administration include ecosystem services provided by trees on the farmlands. A total of 38 forest tree species (24 families) were identified on the different farmlands. Provisioning services dominated the ecosystem services benefits obtained by the farmers and their households. The study has revealed the different ecosystem services provided by forest trees on farmlands. Meanwhile, most of the farmers prefer trees that meet their personal needs. This means for proper adoption of forest trees at local level in agroforestry system, such trees must be able to meet local demands by providing some of their basic needs. The basic needs range from food to medicines, energy, cultural benefits, among others. Meeting of such needs are sometimes location specifics, hence the needto carry out adequate survey of such needs for intended intervention strategy.     Increasing land cover by promoting agroforestry-based tree planting to sustain community livelihood under various social forestry schemes in Indonesia

    The high challenges and expectations in the management of Indonesian Tropical Forests to achieve the community welfare, forest sustainability and sustainable development goals, demands proper management in optimizing the use of forest resources to meet the high dependence of community needs on the forest. The pressure on forests is reflected in the deforestation that occurs as an indication of the various dependencies of the community on forests to meet their daily needs. In this regard, Agroforestry is a potential silvicultural recipe as a solution to restore degraded land and forest that can gain balance ecological, economic and social benefits. This paper aims to provide information on plant growth performance and survival rate in the establishment of agroforestry plot for a total 34 hectares in three schemes of Social Forestry in Indonesia, namely Paru Village Forest (VF)–West Sumatra, Cempaka Forestry Partnership (FP)–Lampung, Tuar Tana Community Forestry (CF)– East Nusa Tenggara, in collaboration between Forestry and Environment Research, Development and Innovation Agency with the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO). It was conducted by planting 26 plant sp Intensive Artificial Regeneration with planting distance of 8x8 m and 5x5 m depend on plant species. The collected data covered for survival rate and height measurement. Growth Percentage was observed at ages 1, 6, 12 and 18 months after plan participation which looks high in maintaining their crops while survival rate in Tuar Tana CF was low enough only 43,2% due to the drough in this semi-arid region which affect the plant growth, eventhough the farmers have high effort in maintaining their crops.     A study on tree species and crops of agroforestry according to ecological geographic map in North Korea

    This study was conducted to analyze the appropriate tree species and crops according to agroforestry target sites in North Korea based on ecological geography and site properties with the purpose of preparation of technical cooperation on agroforestry, one of the main agendas of the Inter-Korean Forest Cooperation Subcommittee. The agroforestry is one of the methods for forest restoration that satisfies both North Korea's fuel and food shortages and the restoration of deforested land and it began in 2003. To this end, the ecological geographic map (13 regions and 4 zones) of North Korea was made by using satellite images with North Korean journals. The target sites for agroforestry was classified according to 18 site conditions depending on 3 site characteristics (soil depth, relative location, slope), and divided as short-term and long-term target sites depend on agroforestry management period. And then, appropriate tree species and crops for agroforestry are selected according to them. By regions within the same zone, tree species and crops were mostly similar, but compared to each zone, they differed. This seems to be because the geographical climatic characteristics reflected in the ecological geographic map vary greatly from zone to zone. Through this, it is expected to provide information that can be more efficiently implemented through analysis of the target sites needed for application of agroforestry and needed for application of agroforestry management and the combination of suitable species and crops.
