    Parcel-level cropland maps are an essential data source for crop and water productivity and many other agronomy applications. The segmentation technique is used to delineate land parcel boundaries of cultivated areas, and to select suitable sampling locations for field data collection in Fezzan, Libya. eCognition Developer was used to performing the segmentation of the Landsat 8 imagery (at 30 m) and NDVI composite of years 2010, 2015, and 2021.

    Libya is characterized by water scarcity. Identifying agriculture areas is essential to improve crop and water productivity in Libya. Crop mask is prepared without ground data as proxy identification of agriculture areas for Fezzan, Libya. Crop varieties (Cereals, Tubers, Forage, Fruit, Vegetables and other crops) are mapped using NDVI time series derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from Sep. 2021 to Apr. 2022 using Google Earth Engine. The map is prepared to support field data collection. The results should be further enhanced with ground validation data.

    In Libya, there is a need to strengthen national capacities to monitor water consumption and productivity through remote sensing and to adopt effective options for increasing water productivity in Fezzan region, as a pilot to be scaled up throughout the country. The impact of this project is that food security in the region is improved through effective use of agricultural water.
