A broad review is provided of factors relevant to enhancing populations of invertebrate resources and methods promoting their recovery by natural recruitment, restocking or habitat restoration. The review focuses on the biological, technical, environmental, economic and biological factors affecting the feasibility of restoring or enhancing productivity of commercially valuable local invertebrate populations. Three categories of enhancement activity are recognized: restoring or enhancing stocks b y conventional management methods, transplanting or seeding, and the use of juveniles produced from collectors in the wild or from hatcheries. Some guidelines are provided on issues related to enhancing recruitment, site selection, experimental closures, ecosystem considerations including predator control, as part of a stock management and enhancement programme. Ownership and co-management issues, and the necessary decisional rules for successful management are discussed, as well as how to recon cile the enhancement programme with other uses of the coastline. Spatial and geographical considerations are addressed, including allocation of areas for enhancement, rotational harvest schemes, use of refugia for protecting juveniles and the spawning stock, and the impact of the use of coastal zones for other human activities.

This publication presents guidelines prepared and adopted by the GFCM with a view to supporting responsible restocking and stock enhancement practices in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Specifically, it emphasizes that a responsible and precautionary approach must be followed to minimize the potential impacts of restocking on the environment, wild stocks and capture fisheries. By recommending practical actions to stakeholders, these guidelines aim to support best practices in restocking and stock enhancement in order to prevent any harm to biodiversity, natural habitats, ecosystems and related ecosystem services and to provide decision-makers with a useful tool for policy development.

The present manual endeavours to specify the essential functions of a seed industry and their logical sequence in terms of national seed programmes. This volume attempts to provide a world-wide review of the principles and objectives, organization, and methods of cereal seed production, quality control, and distribution. Itdiscusses the latest findings on cereal seed and pays particular attention to the situation in developing countries. It is designed primarily for those involved in cereal seed production and utilization, including plant breeders, seed growers, processors, quality control officers, · dealers, and exten sion agents; it will also be of value to agricultural studenls.
