MeetingReport on the Outcome of the FAO Regional Meeting on Agricultural Biotechnologies in Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition in Asia-Pacific 2018The FAO Regional Meeting on Agricultural Biotechnologies in Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition in Asia-Pacific was held from 11 to 13 September 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as a follow-up to the 2016 FAO International Symposium on “The Role of Agricultural Biotechnologies in Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition”. The purpose of the regional meeting was to engage a broad range of stakeholders in the dialogue on the role and application of agricultural biotechnologies to improve food security and nutrition and make food systems more sustainable in the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting highlighted that a wide range of low- to high-tech agricultural biotechnologies are currently being used in the crop, forestry, livestock and fishery sectors to ensure food and nutrition security and to enhance adaptation and resilience of the agriculture sector to climate change in the Asia-Pacific region. It also underlined that one of the key constraints in the development and application of agricultural biotechnologies in the region is lack of investments. The meeting further noted the large gap among countries in the region regarding the application, capacities and the enabling environment for agricultural biotechnologies, and called for countries and other relevant stakeholders to foster and strengthen partnerships, in particular through South-South Cooperation, public-private-partnerships, networking and other mechanisms, to increase investments and strengthen science and innovation cooperation so that the needs of smallholders in the region can be met. The outcomes of the deliberations have been captured and summarized in this information note.

No results found.This document contains a brief report of the FAO Regional Meeting on Agricultural Biotechnologies in Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition in Asia-Pacific held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 11–13 September 2017. During the meeting FAO engaged a broad range of stakeholders from government officials and intergovernmental organizations to non-state actors, including civil society, private sector, research/academic institutions and cooperative/producer organizations in the dialogue on issues related to agricultural biotechnologies. The meeting underlined that a wide range of agricultural biotechnologies are currently being used in the region – from those that are low-tech and have been used for hundreds of years to those that are high-tech and newly developed. The meeting encompassed a wide spectrum of available biotechnologies used in forestry, crops, livestock and aquaculture/fisheries, from low- to high-tech. The meeting report emphasizes the role of agricultural biotechnologies to improve food security and nutrition and make food systems more sustainable in the Asia-Pacific region. The report provides a summary of discussions on issues concerning agricultural biotechnologies in the Asia-Pacific region, including investments; dissemination, adoption and use of biotechnologies and their social and economic impacts; regional innovation opportunities; regulation, policies and intellectual property rights; genetic resources for food and agriculture; nutrition; climate change and South-South Cooperation. It is also includes recommendations and possible follow-up actions for FAO and its member countries. -

No results found.This document presents the final report of the seventieth session of the Executive Committee of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC) convened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 23 to 25 August 2005. The APFIC Executive Committee's main function is to direct the conduct of business and affairs of the Commission between its biennial sessions. Major topics discussed at the session were: progress reports on the intersessional activities of APFIC; regional response to the tsunami; regional fishery bodies in Asia and the Pacific; outcomes of the trash fish and co-management workshops; and preparations for the regional consultative forum meeting and the twenty-ninth session of APFIC. The Committee reiterated that the main focus of APFIC's activities during the next biennium would remain small-scale fisheries and rural aquaculture, which would be pursued through partnerships with competent regional organizations. It was also agreed that the emerging need for an additional focus on fisheries trade and food safety (for both aquaculture and capture fisheries) would be brought into an expanded portfolio of activities for APFIC. A summary of the main recommendations and decisions are included in the session report.
