The Sudan: Project Highlights - OSRO/SUD/200/USA

Abstract

The Government of the United States of America contributed USD 19 million to the FAO project, "Strengthening the Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) sector coordination platforms at central and state levels, increasing immediate food access and restoring the productive capacities of vulnerable farming and pastoral households", which was implemented from 1 January 2022 to 30 September 2023. The project reached 598 200 households (2 991 000 people), of whom 239 280 were headed by women, and 60 staff from government insitutions and international and national non-governmental organizations. Households were able to produce approximately 123 240 tonnes of food in 2022 and an estimated 900 800 tonnes of sorghum during the 2023 main planting season. In addition to agricultural assistance, communities received livestock and vaccination support. Overall, the project enabled housholds to produce their own food, generate income, protect their livestock assets and increase their access to milk, overall improving their food security, nutrition and self-reliance.
