Synopsis (short abstract) Eritrea faces post harvest losses ( of approximately 30 percent across most, if not all, its staple grain harvests Post harvest losses impact the entire country’s economy, but most directly smallholder farmers and their families Initial data indicates that there are an estimated 500 000 smallholder farmer households in Eritrea, and approximately 450 000 to 500 000 hectares of land are cultivated However, due to traditional farming practices and consecutive droughts, production does not usually meet consumption requirements Low agricultural productivity is one of the major challenges, which, combined with PHL, is the major factor giving rise to the necessity to import foodstuffs Against this background, the project aimed to address significant PHL in the country caused by poor handling, drying and storage, and to contribute to increased self reliance of agricultural communities This would be achieved through the provision of post harvest handling training and household hermetic storage equipment.

    The United Republic of Tanzania is a low-income rural economy, with most citizens participating in agriculture for household income generation. Agriculture represents about 23 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and 30 percent of export earnings, and employs 66.9 percent of the working population. In 2000/01 agriculture accounted for 31 percent of GDP but has since fallen to 23 percent despite an annual GDP growth rate of 5-6 percent. The poor performance of the sector is caused by several factors, including poor extension services, financial illiteracy and inadequate access to financial services by smallholder farmers. In collaboration with MoA, the project aimed to address these challenges by improving the competitiveness and enhancing the post-harvest management capacity of VC (smallholder farmers and processors), building the management capacity of producers’ organizations, creating sustainable linkages with other agricultural VC actors, and improving post-harvest practices to enhance farmers’ competitiveness. The project also built linkages between farmer organizations (FOs) and other service providers, encouraging the development of a long-term market strategy and contributing to the national objective to increase agricultural productivity and reduce rural poverty. The project was further expected to increase and stabilize the incomes of smallholder farmers producing paddy in Iringa district, building capacity in post-harvest handling and strengthening the commercial relationships between FOs and other rice VC actors. Market linkages between producer and other value chain actors such as traders and processors were established by the project, with 15 new linkages being forged.

    A Symposium on Post-Harvest Fish Technology was held on 21 and 22 October 1990 in Cairo, Egypt, in conjunction with the Eighth Session of the Committee for Inland Fisheries of Africa (CIFA). The Symposium reviewed the present state of post-harvest fish technology with special reference to inland fisheries in Africa which are generally traditional, small-scale fisheries. It also reviewed the possibilities and constraints with regard to improving the role of the inland fisheries post-harvest secto r in generating income and in providing food. Review papers are included on the kinds and levels of post-harvest losses, on traditional and modern post-harvest technologies, on the present and potential role of inland fish in income generation and in food consumption. Papers also include country overviews and specific topics such as utilization of certain species, packaging, marketing and credit.

    The course provides an overview of the harvesting and post-harvest handling machinery that can enable small- to medium-scale farmers to harvest and process their crops quickly, while significantly reducing drudgery - and more importantly, losses. Such machinery can also help farmers to store their harvested products to keep them safe, nutritious and optimal for sale and self-consumption.
