Animal agriculture substantially contributes to the world economy by providing food, jobs, and financial security for billions of people. With increasing concerns over global climate change and pollution, efforts are underway to reduce the overall environmental impact of animal production. This document analyses emission of non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases, an important segment of the environmental footprint of animal production. It has been developed by a team that included experts in animal /ruminant nutrition, manure and soil management, animal and whole-farm modeling, and animal reproduction. Over 900 publications focusing on nutritional and manure management mitigation strategies for methane (enteric or from manure) and nitrous oxide emissions were reviewed and analysed, and a synthesis of feed-, animal management- and manure management-based mitigation approaches and interactions amongst them has been presented. This document will help researchers, animal industry consultants, policy-makers, animal producers, non-governmental organizations, and other groups with interest in maintaining a viable and environmentally-responsible animal production sector to make sound decisions on selection and adoption of effective and economically feasible greenhouse gas mitigation practices. -

No results found.The impact of climate change on the food and agriculture sectors continues to grow, while challenges exist for climate change mitigation. Assessing and monitoring emissions and reductions within the food and agriculture sectors is proven to be more intricate compared to other sectors. Addressing these challenges necessitates international collaboration to enhance the capacities of agricultural stakeholders in data collection and GHG appraisal, adhering to certified methodologies. This project was designed to utilise the FAO developed EX-Ante Carbon balance tool (EX-ACT) to assess the impact of IFAD implemented agriculture and forestry development initiatives on climate change mitigation, with a specific focus on the carbon balance). The primary goal was to systematically reduce Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture systematically generating climate-resilient investment options for development projects and programmes. -

No results found.Ecuador has submitted two national communications (NCs 2000, 2012) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), providing information on greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, and measures to mitigate and to facilitate adequate adaptation to climate change among other information. In 2016, Ecuador also presented its First Biennial Update Report (BUR), which included the REDD+ technical annex to the BUR. In 2010, GHG emissions from the Agriculture and the Land Use, Land Use C hange and Forestry (LULUCF) sectors contributed to respectively 18 % and 30% of the national GHG emissions. Since 2013, the United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) and the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programmes have provide support to Ecuador for the preparation and reporting of the national GHG inventory (NGHGI), agriculture and LULUCF components, to the UNFCCC. This brief hi ghlights the implemented activities and fruitful collaboration that were fundamental in assisting Ecuador in successfully meeting its commitments to the UNFCCC reporting process for the Agriculture and LULUCF sectors.
