Synopsis (short abstract) This working paper is the report of a three-member mission from the Directorate General of Fisheries, Indonesia, which visited Andhra Pradesh for six weeks early in 1981 at the request of the Government. The FAO/SIDA Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) acted as supporting agency for the mission in accordance with the Buenos Aires Action Plan of the United Nations to foster Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC). Several people in the state assisted the mission during the study; Mr. S. Banerjee, Director of Fisheries, and other fishery officers in Hyderabad and at district levels in Krishna, West Godavari, East Godavari, Srikakulam and Nellore provided information and made necessary arrangements for field visits and interviews; logistic support from district collectors and sub-collectors greatly facilitated the work of the mission. Dr. M. Karim of the BOBP assisted the mission during the study and the report preparation. The costs of travel and of servicing the m ission were met by BOBP, also the costs of publication of the report.

    This paper describes four fishing communities of Adirampattinam, a town about 350km from Madras, and analyses their social structure. It also describes the strategy adopted by the Bay of Bengal Programme to improve the lot of these communities and the experimental work in this direction — which was carried out in cooperation with the fisheries department of Tamil Nadu and non-government agencies. This paper was drafted early 1982 and refers mainly to work carried out during 1980 - 1981. The Bay of Bengal Programme for the Development of Small-Scale Fisheries, GCP/RA5/040/SWE, referred to in brief as the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP), is funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Five countries — Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand are members of the Programme. Its main aims are to develop, demonstrate and promote technologies and methodologies to improve the c onditions of small-scale fisherfolk and the supply of fish from the small-scale sector in the Bay of Bengal region. This document is a working paper and has not been cleared by the FAO, the Government of Tamil Nadu or the Government of India.

    Fishing Trials With High-Opening Bottom Trawls In Palk Bay, Tamil Nadu - BOBP/WP/10 1980

    This document is the first report of fishing trials held with high-opening bottom trawls in Palk Bay, off Mandapam in Tamil Nadu, India, during March-July 1980. The trials were conducted jointly by the Bay of Bengal Programme and the Government of Tamil Nadu. The main objective of the trials was to as certain the technical and economic feasibility of using high-opening bottom trawls to tap demersal and pelagic stocks of food fish in the Palk Bay areas, and to train local counterparts in the desi gn, construction and use of these trawls. The Bay of Bengal Programme provided a consultant masterfisherman, Mr. John Crockett, to conduct the trials, under the supervision of Mr. G. Pajot, fishing technologist. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Government, Mr. S. Pandurangan and Mr. P. V. Ramamurthy served as counterparts.

    Inventory of Kattumarams and Their Fishing Gear in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu - BOBP/WP/2 1980

    During the second half of 1979 and the first quarter of 1980 a survey was carried out in some fishing villages of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, to obtain information on the types of kattumarams used on the East Coast of India, the kinds of fishing gear used with the kattumaram, the methods of operation, catches and costs. This working paper presents the results of the survey. The text and the photographs give a brief summary of kattumaram types and their economic importance. A comprehensiv e pictorial record of the kattumaram types is also available. For those requiring more detailed data on materiats, construction, fishing gear, operations and costs, a comprehensive record of the information obtained during the survey is to be found in the appendices. The survey was carried out by Mr. T. R. Menon, Chief Instructor (Craft and Gear), Central Institute of Fisheries, Nautical and Engineering Training (CIFNET), Cochin. He was deputed to the Bay of Bengal Programme during July-S eptember 1979 and in March 1980. The Bay of Bengal Programme and FAO express their gratitude to the Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, and to the Director of CIFNET for making Mr. Menons services available to carry out the work.
