Improving livelihoods through exporting artisanally processed fish. 2005

A study was carried on the export of traditional African fishery products to “ethnic” markets in the European Union, United States and Canada. The study was conducted in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana and covered export plants, their suppliers, the competent authorities for sanitary certification, the fisheries departments, export promotion councils, and other stakeholders. The main export-oriented traditional fish products identified were smoke-dried fish and shrimps, sun-dried fish and live crab s. In both countries the socio-economic importance of traditional fish processing and export operations is considerably higher than indicated by official statistics, contributing to incomes of artisanal fishermen and women fish processors, incomes of small-scale fish exporters, employment, and foreign exchange earnings. Also the contribution to responsible fisheries was underestimated. There are indications of unsatisfied demand but further growth of the sub-sector would depend on overcomi ng certain weaknesses identified by the study, such as weaknesses of competent authorities in effectively enforcing regulations, limited knowledge by operators of the sanitary regulations, misuse in some cases of registration numbers and inclusion of products from non-registered producers in consignments from registered ones, police harassments, low awareness among authorities of the importance of the trade, and lack of organization within the sub-sector. Also, the design of the facilities and o f the smoking operations themselves seemed rather wasteful of fuel wood. As a direct result of the study, authorities already committed themselves in reviewing the certification process in order to address its cumbersomeness and match the quality assurance systems with the rationale and systematic approach within the global sanitary concept; to deploy staff to exit points; and to improve relations with operators and providing them more advisory services.

This report contains a market assessment of the 19 African countries receiving support under an EU-funded programme called SmartFish1. The purpose of the assessment was to identify national production trends (e.g. decline or increase) with regard to capture fisheries (fish caught wild) and aquaculture (fish farming) as well as future potentials with regards to further production and increased regional trade. Threats to current production as well as to future developments were also identified. Fu rthermore, for each of the countries, import and export flows of fish and fish products were examined, as well as the demand for the products (within, as well as outside the countries).

The State of Food and Agriculture 2022
Leveraging agricultural automation for transforming agrifood systems
    2022
Automation has been shaping world agriculture since the early twentieth century. Motorized mechanization has brought significant benefits in terms of improved productivity, reduced drudgery and more efficient allocation of labour, but also some negative environmental impacts. More recently, a new generation of digital agricultural automation technologies has appeared, with the potential to further enhance productivity, as well as resilience, while also addressing the environmental sustainability challenges driven by past mechanization. The State of Food and Agriculture 2022 looks into the drivers of agricultural automation, including the more recent digital technologies. Based on 27 case studies, the report analyses the business case for adoption of digital automation technologies in different agricultural production systems across the world. It identifies several barriers preventing inclusive adoption of these technologies, particularly by small-scale producers. Key barriers are low digital literacy and lack of an enabling infrastructure, such as connectivity and access to electricity, in addition to financial constraints. Based on the analysis, the publication suggests policies to ensure that disadvantaged groups in developing regions can benefit from agricultural automation and that automation contributes to sustainable and resilient agrifood systems.

The review finds that high demand and tight supplies led prices of most dairy products to rebound since October. Furthermore, global milk production is forecast to expand at a faster pace in 2023 while world dairy trade may continue to contract in 2023, albeit less steeply than the previous year.
