The Stakeholder Meeting to Present and Discuss the FAO Study Report on Cross-Border Trade in Artisanal Smoked Fish in West Africa was jointly organized by the Value Chain Development Team (NFIMV) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the FAO Representation in Togo (FAOTG). The Meeting aimed to share, discuss and validate the results of this study report, and to gather further recommendations from the various stakeholders. It also paved the way for the development of a strategic plan to guide the way forward in improving cross-border trade in smoked fish and strengthening trade integration in the subregion in light of the recommendations made and the opportunities offered by regional fish trade, in particular the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The meeting included a session of ten thematic presentations, group sessions on key policy recommendations, as well as concluding remarks and next steps. It was attended by 27 representatives of fisheries ministries, fish processors and traders from the five countries concerned (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo), and FAO representatives.

Cross-border coordination of livestock movements and sharing of natural resources to strengthen the resilience of pastoralist communities in the Greater Karamoja Cluster

Frequent and persistent droughts are a recurrent feature of the Greater Karamoja Cluster (GKC). The impacts of these droughts are exacerbated by climate change, advancing desertification and the environmental degradation of rangelands. The resulting persistent food insecurity of pastoralist communities is worsened by the occurence of transboundary animal diseases (TADs) and the eruption of conflicts over natural resources within countries and across borders. The Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) decade-long work in the GKC shows that interventions focusing on livestock mobility and natural resource management play an important role towards strengthening livelihoods, sustaining peace and indirectly preventing conflict. More specifically, the sustainable cross-border sharing of natural resources and the coordination of animal movements (and the services associated with it, such as vaccination and health inspection) have been used effectively by FAO and its partners to prevent and mitigate conflicts. Interventions combining a focus on livestock mobility and the preservation of natural resources with the goals of sustainable social transformation, innovation and conflict prevention have proved most cost-effective at increasing resilience. FAO and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s (IGAD) Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) have been the main facilitators of efforts to promote intercommunity, cross-border coordination of livestock mobility and sharing of natural resources in IGAD cross-border areas. This document presents FAO’s experience in this respect, gained over the past decade in different cross-border areas of Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan.

This event, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 25–27 March 2025, brought together experts, government representatives, and organizations from across the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen knowledge exchange on national forest inventories (NFIs). Accurate and transparent forest data is essential for sustainable forest management and tracking progress toward global commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and nationally determined contributions (NDCs).Organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), this regional workshop provided a platform for countries to share best practices, enhance technical knowledge, and explore opportunities for collaboration on forest monitoring. Discussions focused on NFI design, implementation, and data analysis, as well as innovative tools such as remote sensing and digital reporting methods. The event also paved the way for building a regional network to foster long-term cooperation and harmonisation of forest monitoring methodologies across the Asia-Pacific region.
