    The Sudan has a significant need and substantial potential to increase milk and beef production from Kenana and Butana cattle breeds. Kenana cattle are primarily raised for milk in villages, urban areas, and semi-nomadic settings, grazing naturally and relying on crop residues from rain-fed agricultural systems. Along with Butana cattle breed, Kenana cattle are among the top milk producers in the Sudan and serve as valuable sources of quality bulls and dams for genetic improvement in other states. However, the full potential of these promising dairy breeds has not yet been realized due to factors such as inadequate breeding technologies and poor feeding practices, even though effective strategies are achievable at a relatively low cost. Following independence, the Sudanese government established two livestock research stations in 1957 for the genetic conservation of Butana and Kenana cattle breeds. The Um Banien Livestock Production Research Station in Sinnar State was set up to improve the Kenana breed through selective breeding, produce elite Kenana bulls for distribution, and conduct research on forage production and animal feeding. However, the station was severely damaged and neglected in the early 1990s, resulting in a halt to its activities despite the significant local genetic resources available.

    An assessment of land degradation was carried out following the UNCCD’s Good Practice Guidance (GPG) version 2 for the SDG Indicator 15.3.1 (Proportion of land that is degraded over total land area) for North Kordofan state in Sudan for baseline period of 2000 - 2015. Using the default parameters in the SEPAL SDG 15.3.1 module, one out all out statistical principle was used to combine all the sub-indicators of productivity, land cover and soil organic carbon. Percentages of land degraded within the localities in the state were computed.

    The need for developing suitable feeds based on locally available inexpensive ingredients has been widely recognized. Since lack of trained personnel is the main constraint in the development of fish feed technology in developing countries, the FAO/UNDP Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) organized a special training course in fish feed technology at the College of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, with a view to forming a small corps of fish feed specialists wh o could then be the focal points for future feed development programmes in their respective countries. The first report of the training course was presented in the report ADCP /REP/79/8. This present volume represents the edited texts of lectures presented by different specialists. Some additional material has been included for more complete coverage of the subject. Together, these texts may be considered to constitute a manual on fish feed technology, even though they were not prepared for that purpose. Twenty-six papers are included, under the general headings: (1) Digestion, physiology and anatomy; (2) nutritional bioenergetics; (3) nutritional biochemistry; (4) feedstuffs; (5) feed formulation; (6) feed manufacturing technology; (7) practical diets; and (8) quality control. Appendices include conversion tables, electrical data, and details on pelletability of selective feedstuffs, pellet die specifications, and equipment requirements for an 8 ton an hour feed mill.
