Synopsis (short abstract) The impacts of climate change on the global hydrological cycle are expected to vary the patterns of demand and supply of water for agriculture – the dominant user of freshwater. The extent and productivity of both irrigated and rainfed agriculture can be expected to change. As a result, the livelihoods of rural communities and the food security of a predominantly urban population are at risk from water-related impacts linked primarily to climate variability. The rural poor, who are the most vuln erable, are likely to be disproportionately affected. Adaptation measures that build upon improved land and water management practices will be fundamental in boosting overall resilience to climate change. And this is not just to maintain food security: the continued integrity of land and water systems is essential for all economic uses of water. This report summarizes current knowledge of the anticipated impacts of climate change on water availability for agriculture and examines the implicat ions for local and national food security. It analyses expected impact of climate change on a set of major agricultural systems at risk and makes the case for immediate implementation of ‘no-regrets’ strategies which have both positive development outcomes and make agricultural systems resilient. It is hoped that policy makers and planners can use this report to frame their adaptation responses when considering both the water variable in agriculture and the competing demands from other users.

    This Synthesis Paper is based on an Expert Meeting held in Rome 26 to 28 February 2008 as a preparation for the FAO High Level Conference (HLC) on World Food Security and the Challengesof Climate Change and Bioenergy in June 2008. The paper contains appraisal of the implications of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (AR4-IPCC) for agricultural water management and, based on that evidence, offers a more operationally focused diagnosis. It provides a summ ary analysis of a baseline, including projected trends without climate change and mitigation measures; the anticipated set of climate change impacts; a set of possible responses; main findings and recommendations; and a set of options for decision-makers.

    The objective of this project, funded by the Spanish Cooperation, is to improve food security and livelihoods of the vulnerable communities in Maan and Karak Governorates, while contributing to water conservation through sustainable management. It also aims to empower local rural communities especially those suffering from poverty through capacity building and tool provision.The project outcome will enhance food security for the most vulnerable beneficiaries through adopting climate-smart agricultural practices, and enhance livelihoods for the most vulnerable beneficiaries through improving the knowledge and the capacities of the beneficiaries on natural resources sustainable utilization.يهدف هذا المشروع، الممول من قبل التعاون الإسباني الى تحسين الأمن الغذائي وسبل العيش للمجتمعات الأقل حظا في محافظتي معان والكرك، مع المساهمة في الحفاظ على المياه من خلال الإدارة المستدامة. ويهدف أيضًا إلى تمكين المجتمعات الريفية المحلية وخاصة تلك التي تعاني من الفقر من خلال بناء القدرات وتوفير الأدوات.وستعمل مخرجات المشروع على تعزيز الأمن الغذائي للمستفيدين الأكثر ضعفا من خلال اعتماد ممارسات زراعية ذكية مناخيا، وتعزيز سبل العيش للمستفيدين الأكثر ضعفا من خلال تحسين معارف وقدرات المستفيدين بشأن الاستخدام المستدام للموارد الطبيعية.
