Synopsis (short abstract) The ACT Project supports countries to implement the three Codex AMR texts. One of those texts is the Guidelines on integrated monitoring and surveillance of foodborne antimicrobial resistance. Assessments of surveillance capacities in Colombia revealed great potential to progress to the integrated monitoring and surveillance called for in the Codex AMR guidelines. In response, the country has created, with support from the ACT project, an AMR Epidemiological Unit, which will be an important step towards the containment of AMR in the country.

    The ACT Project supports countries to implement the three Codex AMR texts. One of the key pillars in achieving this goal is raising awareness. In Nepal, the Nepal Chapter of FAO’s World Food Forum (WFF), part of the Global Youth Action Initiative, is supporting the ACT Project and harnessing the power of youth networks to reach communities and individuals the project itself cannot directly engage. This story highlights how young volunteers and leaders are spreading awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among their peers and within their communities.

    The FAO-implemented and Republic of Korea-funded Action to support implementation of Codex AMR Texts (ACT) project is supporting six countries to improve awareness, good practices, governance and surveillance of foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This story describes the training and support offered by the ACT project to its four implementing countries in Asia: Cambodia, Mongolia, Nepal and Pakistan, to participate in proficiency testing at a FAO Reference Centre for AMR at the Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (CU VET) in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious global health threat and a food safety issue of primary concern. Governments and international organizations have recognized that the issue has to be approached in a multidisciplinary manner, addressing animal, plant, and human health as well as the environment under the One Health approach. This brochure presents the FAO project to facilitate the implementation of Codex texts on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to support the containment and reduction of foodborne AMR. It also briefly describes what different target audiences (government authorities, producers and processors of food, animal, and plants/crops health professionals, consumers) can do in addressing this issue.
