Enhancing Zimbabwe’s Animal Health and Food Safety Systems - GCP/ZIM/030/EC 2025

Agriculture and agribusiness have historically been the mainstay of the Zimbabwean economy and key for employment, and will remain so for the foreseeable future, in particular for young people. This implies that an increase in livestock production is key in poverty reduction and food security. The agricultural sector has been beset by numerous challenges, which have been a huge constraint to accessing markets and trade opportunities and achieving sustainable growth and development. The challenges include a lack of appropriate policy and regulatory framework, low productivity, high cost of inputs and utilities, poor infrastructure, an unfavourable pricing regime, funding challenges, and poor access to information. Prolonged droughts and occasional floods due to climate change are exacerbating these challenges. In the light of these challenges, the project was formulated to enhance Zimbabwe’s animal health and sanitary and phytosanitary/food safety systems.

Strengthening Capacities to Implement Agricultural and Rural Development Strategies in Georgia - GCP/GEO/012/AUS 2023

In rural areas of Georgia, there are disparities in living conditions and access to essential services in comparison to urban areas. The growth of cities and the trend of out migration of rural populations, particularly youth, exacerbate these problems. There are also discrepancies between the labourconditions of men and women in rural areas of the country, because women tend to have limited access to opportunities, equipment, technology and land. This project was designed to enhance agricultural productivity, address gender disparities and improve access to services in rural areas by supporting the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA) to implement the Strategy for Agricultural Development 2015-2020 and the Rural Development Strategy 2017-2020, both of which employ integrated approaches to rural development.

Enhancing the Agricultural Sector in Georgia - GCP/GEO/011/EC 2023

Despite the overall economic progress of recent years and promising processes unfolding in agriculture in Georgia, much remains to be done to ensure the successful modernization of the rural economy and inclusive growth. The small-scale and fragmented nature of agricultural production, the lack of technology and expertise, the poor state of rural infrastructure, and the difficulties in accessing the finances needed to upgrade productive capacities necessitate further comprehensive reforms in the country’s agricultural sector. Against this background, the European Union (EU) and FAO have been working together to help Georgia boost its agriculture production by introducing modern, environmentally sustainable and cost-effective production techniques. This project was funded by the European Union under the third phase of the European Neighborhood Program for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD III) and built on the results delivered by FAO under ENPARD I and ENPARD II, as well as on the ongoing activities of ENPARD stakeholders implementing Liaison Entre Actions de Développementde l’EconomieRurale(LEADER) projects in eight municipalities in Georgia.
