No results found.En los últimos 25 años se han producido cambios significativos en la vida rural de América Latina, en sus dimensiones política, económica, social, laboral, demográfica, cultural y ambiental, a partir de lo que se denominó los Programas de Ajuste Estructural y de las decisiones políticas y económicas que tomó cada país en particular. El presente documento sintetiza los estudios llevados a cabo en los ocho países de América del Sur y tiene la pretensión de compendiar los valiosos aportes de ca da uno de ellos. El documento Estrategias de reformas institucionales en inversiones para los Sistemas de Extensión y Transferencia de Tecnología Agraria en Centroamérica y República Dominicana (FAO, 2014) sintetiza los resultados de Centroamérica y la República Dominicana. -

No results found.Este documento analiza algunos de los principales temas y desafíos que influyen en las causas del hambre y la desnutrición en Centroamérica, señalando especialmente aquellos que son muy específicos o que afectan en mayor medida a esta región con respecto del resto del continente. Igualmente, se desea mostrar que Centroamérica no es un bloque homogéneo, pues existe una diversidad en el grado de desarrollo de los países. Con ello, se pretende ampliar la mirada y aportar un valor agregado al conjun to del Panorama de la Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional en América Latina y el Caribe, que facilite en última instancia el análisis y las propuestas de políticas y programas públicos para erradicar el hambre en el istmo. Desde un punto de vista geográfico y cultural, la región mesoamericana comprende un rico espacio cultural e histórico que engloba a ocho países, desde México hasta Panamá. Desde un punto de vista político, cuando se menciona a Centroamérica, se hace referencia a los países que se han adherido al proceso de integración regional, iniciado ya en la década de los 60 cuando se estableció el Mercado Común Centroamericano (MCCA), y consolidado en el año 1991 con la creación del Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA). En la actualidad forman parte del mismo ocho países (en orden alfabético): Belice, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panamá y República Dominicana.

No results found.Based on an innovative smallholder-specific dataset, this report illustrates the lives of smallholder farmers in nine developing and emerging countries, using economics to analyze data from rural household surveys. It examines different dimensions of smallholders’ lives: their farm and families; their production and the inputs they use for it; their work both on- and off-farm; their income and how it is made up; their consumption; and, their participation in markets. Smallholders choose how to live their lives. But these choices are both constrained and inter-dependent. The report synthesizes the information from the data together with those from the literature to focus on what smallholders choose and why.
