Synopsis (short abstract) In Uganda, over 200 million meals contain poultry that are slaughtered without following good practices. The local government of Mukono and Wakiso districts, in cooperation with local poultry slaughter facilities, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Industry and Fisheries and FAO, are piloting a certification system for poultry slaughter facilities that not only supports hygienic poultry slaughter but also reduces the need of daily animal inspection.

    In Kenya, 200 million meals containing chicken are consumed each year. Out of these, around 120 million meals contain chicken that have been slaughtered without following good practices. The local governments of Nairobi city county and Kiambu county in collaboration with 40 poultry farmers and FAO are piloting an intervention to improve inspection of poultry slaughter through a certification system based on a commonly agreed checklist of good practices.

    In Uganda, to satisfy the rapidly increasing demand of growing urban populations for animal source food (ASFs), livestock holdings and value chains in and around peri-urban and urban areas are transforming more rapidly than elsewhere in the country, exacerbating the potential negative impacts of livestock keeping on the environment and public health. In order to identify major public health hazards associated with the particularly rapidly expanding poultry value chain(s), we surveyed the poultry value chain actors in Wakiso and Mukono districts. We assessed their business practices and the extent to which they comply with recommended legislation on biosecurity and public health practices.
