Synopsis (short abstract) this MFW will be an approach to restoration which requires coordination between sectors intended to promote productive multifunctional territories characterised by an optimal balance negotiated with local actors in terms of supply of economic, social and environmental benefits. This internationally-recognized vision for Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) allows the promotion of synergies between the three Rio conventions and can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The main issue, which will be discussed during the 5th MFW, is therefore the following: how can efforts on restoration of forests and Mediterranean landscapes help reaching the global targets, such as the Bonn challenge, the 15th Aichi Target of the CBD, the UNCCD target on land degradation neutrality, the Paris Agreement on climate and the decisions that will be taken during the UNFCCC COP 22 in Marrakech and SDG 15, related to these issues? The 5th MFW will aim at promoting the topic of restoration o n a Mediterranean scale, at federating around forests various ongoing initiatives related to the Rio conventions, and at concretizing those initiatives through an agenda of ambitious field actions and by collectively mobilizing technical and financial partners from countries surrounding the Mediterranean.

    FAO established the Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism (FLRM) in 2014, with the aim of helping countries meet their ambitious pledges to restore degraded lands made under the Bonn Challenge and related regional processes such as the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100), and the Initiative 20x20 in Latin America, as well as other global initiatives related to landscape restoration such as the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets under the united nations convention to combat Desertification (unccD) and the convention on Biological Diversity (cBD) Aichi Biodiversity Targets. Altogether, 350 million hectares of degraded land world-wide are targeted to be restored by 2030.

    COFO23 Side event -Forest and Landscape Restoration regional initiatives: toward the regionalization of the Bonn Challenge 2016

    Several regional or sub regional initiatives are currently on going on in Forest and Landscape Restoration in Latin America, Africa, Asia Pacific and the Mediterranean. These regional initiatives contribute to the achievement of the Bonn Challenge which aims to restore 150 million hectares by 2020. Those regional or sub regional initiatives/dynamics emerged recently with the support of several key partners involved in the Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration such as FAO, IUCN, WRI or the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD. They help to implement national FLR efforts at the most relevant scale to develop: (i) collaboration between countries with the same ecosystems and/or FLR issues, (ii) knowledge sharing on good practices, monitoring tools and guidelines and (iii) pooling of both human and financial resources by building relevant alliances between technical and/or financial partners. This side event will allow the members of those regional initiatives to understand the diversity of the existing ongoing dynamics in the different regions and will help all partners involved in those regional dynamics to build on existing successful results in Latin America, Africa, Asia-Pacific or the Mediterranean.

    This Unasylva issue aims at showcasing forest and landscape restoration (FLR) opportunities and recent developments that have the power to upscale restoration, in order to achieving the Bonn Challenge pledge and other national and international commitments (Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) Post-2020 Agenda, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Land Degradation Neutrality, Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)) and addressing the needs of the UN Decade 2021-2030 on Ecosystem Restoration. The content adresses thematics of relevance to various audiences: i) flagship restoration initiatives that differ from the so-called “business-as-usual” as they channel more funds, better empower local stakeholders and provide enhanced technical assistance through partners’ coalitions; ii) technical advances that can spread FLR and have a huge potential to be mainstreamed for different reasons (low cost, adaptability, relevance to many ecosystems and contexts, ease of implementation…); iii) the enabling factors for restoration, i.e. coordination, policy environment, resources, knowledge and capacities, as these are the enabling conditions for action to take place on the ground.
