ArticleThe change in forest productivity and stand-dynamics under climate change in East Asian temperate forests: A case study from South Korean forests

No results found.The velocity and impact of climate change on forest appear to be site, environment, and tree species-specific.The primary objective of this research is to assess the changes in productivity of major temperate tree species in South Korea using terrestrial inventory and satellite remote sensing data. The area covered by each tree species was further categorized into either lowland forest (LLF) or high mountain forest (HMF) and investigated. We used the repeated Korean national forest inventory (NFI) data to calculate a stand-level annual increment (SAI). We then compared the SAI, a ground-based productivity measure, to MODIS net primary productivity (NPP) as a measure of productivity based on satellite imagery. In addition, the growth index of each increment core, which eliminated the effect of tree age on radial growth, was derived as an indicator of the variation of productivity by tree species over the past four decades. Based on these steps, we understand the species- and elevation-dependent dynamics. The secondary objective is to predict the forest dynamics under climate change using the Perfect Plasticity Approximation with Simple Biogeochemistry (PPA- SiBGC) model. The PPA-SiBGC is an analytically tractable model of forest dynamics, defined in terms of parameters for individual trees, including allometry, growth, and mortality. We estimated these parameters for the major species by using NFI and increment core data. We predicted forest dynamics using the following time-series metrics: Net ecosystem exchange, aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, C, soil respiration, and relative abundance. We then focus on comparing the impact of climate change on LLF and HMF. The results of our study can be used to develop climate-smart forest management strategies to ensure that both LLF and HMF continue to be resilient and continue to provide a wide range of ecosystem services in the Eastern Asian region. No results found.The high challenges and expectations in the management of Indonesian Tropical Forests to achieve the community welfare, forest sustainability and sustainable development goals, demands proper management in optimizing the use of forest resources to meet the high dependence of community needs on the forest. The pressure on forests is reflected in the deforestation that occurs as an indication of the various dependencies of the community on forests to meet their daily needs. In this regard, Agroforestry is a potential silvicultural recipe as a solution to restore degraded land and forest that can gain balance ecological, economic and social benefits. This paper aims to provide information on plant growth performance and survival rate in the establishment of agroforestry plot for a total 34 hectares in three schemes of Social Forestry in Indonesia, namely Paru Village Forest (VF)–West Sumatra, Cempaka Forestry Partnership (FP)–Lampung, Tuar Tana Community Forestry (CF)– East Nusa Tenggara, in collaboration between Forestry and Environment Research, Development and Innovation Agency with the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO). It was conducted by planting 26 plant sp Intensive Artificial Regeneration with planting distance of 8x8 m and 5x5 m depend on plant species. The collected data covered for survival rate and height measurement. Growth Percentage was observed at ages 1, 6, 12 and 18 months after plan participation which looks high in maintaining their crops while survival rate in Tuar Tana CF was low enough only 43,2% due to the drough in this semi-arid region which affect the plant growth, eventhough the farmers have high effort in maintaining their crops. No results found.While religious entities have targeted ecosystem-service producing biodiversity in cities for worship purposes, this human encroachment by the itinerant Open Space Worship (OSW) Sects in Zimbabwe has pushed the frontiers of religion-environment component of the socio-ecological systems framework to conflictual relations. Due to the importance of urban green spaces’ function of carbon sequestration, scholars posit the quality of life in cities depends on locally produced ecosystem services. To ensure the delivery of urban ecosystem services there is need for assorted, multi-functional, and accessible blue and green infrastructure throughout our cities. It underscores the importance of green spaces in cities as key components of the socio-ecological systems framework where the natural forest wood serves as the carbon sink for sequestration and therefore human wellbeing. Anthropocentric OSW activities’ encroachment within these spaces calls for sustainable socio-ecological system management through responsive policies, which can benefit from the payment for ecosystem services using lease agreements and permits for open Worship Parks within cities to control access to the broader socio-ecological system (SESF) assets. All OSW sects studied in the City of Bulawayo use one form or another of ecosystem services and benefits, ranging from the provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural ecosystem services. Open space worship sects are prepared to pay in cash for value accrued from green spaces they use. The study particularly responds to the demands and aspirations of SDG 11: Sustainable Cities, Communities, and SDGOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
