Book (series)Report of the Global Workshop between regional fishery bodies and basin management organizations for scaling up cooperation towards sustainable inland fisheries in the context of food security and nutrition, Entebbe, Uganda, 6–8 December 2023 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Small-scale fisheries in inland waters are particularly important for supporting local communities, providing livelihoods, and ensuring food security, especially in rural areas along or around existing water basins. However, these food systems are vulnerable to stressors such as pollution, habitat loss and degradation, draining wetlands, river fragmentation and poor land management. Indeed, there is potential to increase synergies between these different sectors using “integrated water resources management” (IWRM). There are currently no global or regional frameworks between regional fishery bodies (RFBs) and basin management organizations (BMOs) in place to exploit synergies between inland fisheries and other water use sectors. Consequently, the overall objective of the first global workshop between RFBs and BMOs, held in Entebbe, Uganda from 6 to 8 December 2023 was to promote, discuss and establish an effective cooperation framework between BMOs and RFBs and to develop concerted approaches to integrate inland fisheries management into basin management, in the context of climate change, water scarcity, food security and ecosystem health. The workshop report will share the outcomes from this workshop which resulted in a consensus on the importance of employing multidisciplinary approaches, recognizing their value and the imperative need for such strategies. -
Book (stand-alone)Interactive mechanisms for small-scale fisheries management: Report of the regional consultation 2002
Also available in:
No results found. This document is a report of the proceedings and compilation of the papers presented at the regional consultation on interactive mechanisms for small-scale fisheries management, which was held in Bangkok, Thailand in November 2001. The meeting identifies constraints and responsibilities in decentralized small-scale fisheries management and offers practical solutions to the social, economic, environmental and legal constraints to local fisheries management. The fisheries sector has grown dramatic ally in Asia over the past three decades and the region is now a main supplier to the global fish market. However, the impressive growth has been accompanied by serious challenges in the form of over-exploitation of coastal resources. Country papers included in the publication examine national experiences in small-scale fisheries management in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. Separate papers provide regional perspectives on the issue while ex perience papers report on the working of small-scale fisheries management projects in the region. -
Book (stand-alone)Legislating for sustainable small-scale fisheries
A guide and considerations for implementing aspects of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication in national legislation
2020The Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) are the first international instrument dedicated entirely to the small-scale fisheries sector. While the implementation of the SSF Guidelines will require legal and regulatory adjustments beyond national fisheries legislation to ensure political and legislative coherence and fully reflect the breadth of their provisions, the fundamental function of fisheries law in a sustainable use, management, and the development of small-scale fisheries is indisputable. Appropriate fisheries legislation provides the strongest possible framework for inclusive, participatory fisheries governance and resource management by providing a coherent basis for implementing and enforcing the SSF Guidelines and other related international and regional agreements and commitments. Legislation can therefore be a tangible way to support small-scale fishers, fish workers, and their communities and contribute to broader development goals, including the progressive realization of the right to food, poverty eradication, equitable development, and sustainable resource utilization. This document, Legislating for Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries – A guide and considerations for implementing aspects of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication in National Legislation, is a tool for States to strengthen their fisheries legislation in order to establish conditions for inclusive and sustainable small-scale fisheries development, taking into account the interrelatedness of social, economic and environmental sustainability, while focusing on marginalized groups.
