    La presente edición de Situación de los Mercados de Productos Básicos (SMPB) difere notablemente de las anteriores. Hasta ahora la SMPB se centraba principalmente en el análisis de las novedades registradas en los mercados de productos básicos, acompañado de una descripción de la situación en curso y de las perspectivas a corto plazo. La SMPB 2001-2002 se apartó algo de ese formato, incluyendo algunos artículos analíticos breves, en los que se trataba de explicar con mayor detalle los factores q ue configuran la evolución del mercado de productos básicos. Desde hace unos años, la situación y las perspectivas de los productos alimenticios y agropecuarios se publican en las páginas web de la Dirección de Productos Básicos y Comercio, que se encuentran en el sitio web de la FAO, www.fao.org (bajo Economía, Productos Básicos y Comercio) o directamente en el sitio www.fao.org/ES/ESC, en las que existen mayores posibilidades para una divulgación oportuna de informaciones sobre mercados más pormenorizadas y una actualización más frecuente de lo que puede hacerse a través de las publicaciones impresas convencionales. Las páginas web han sido objeto de una reformulación destinada a facilitar su acceso y utilización, con lo cual se evita repetir la misma información en forma impresa.

    La edición de 2020 de El estado de los mercados de productos básicos agrícolas (SOCO 2020) se centra en el examen de políticas y mecanismos que promueven resultados sostenibles (económicos, sociales y ambientales) en los mercados agrícolas y alimentarios, tanto a escala mundial como nacional. El análisis se estructura en torno a las tendencias y los desafíos que ocupan el centro de los debates mundiales sobre comercio y desarrollo. Esto incluye la evolución del comercio y los mercados; la aparición de cadenas de valor mundiales en la alimentación y la agricultura; la medida en que los pequeños productores de los países en desarrollo participan en las cadenas de valor y los mercados, y los efectos transformadores de la tecnología digital en los mercados. En torno a estos temas, el SOCO 2020 examina políticas e instituciones que pueden promover un crecimiento económico inclusivo y además aprovechar los mercados para contribuir al cumplimiento de la Agenda 2030 y sus Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.

    The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.

    Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated.

    These guidelines aim to provide practical guidance in the registration of microorganisms, botanicals and semiochemicals for plant protection and public health. The document focuses primarily on data requirements for registration and evaluation approaches. It provides national authorities with a framework for registering biopesticides, identifies aspects where they differ from chemical pesticides, and indicates where registration authorities should pay special attention. Specific chapters are ded icated to each type of biopesticide: microbials, botanicals and semiochemicals. These guidelines are complementary to the two technical Guidelines already published in the framework of the International FAO/WHO Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management: the Guidelines on registration of pesticides (2010) and the Guidelines on data requirements for the registration of pesticides (2014).
