DocumentOther documentForest assessment and monitoring 2002The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA 2000) is now completed, but work has already begun on the next global assessment. The expert consultation "Global Forest Resources Assessments - Linking National and International Efforts", known as Kotka IV, brought together international experts in July 2002 to address future concepts and strategies. The articles in this issue of Unasylva are adapted for a wider audience from papers prepared for the meeting. Without going into technical detail, they explore links among assessment and monitoring, national and international information needs, criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, and reporting of forest-related information to international instruments. The technical details can be found on the FAO Web site (www.fao.org/forestry) and will be published in the Kotka IV proceedings.

Book (stand-alone)GuidelineGlobal Forest Resources Assessment Update 2005. Guidelines for Country Reporting to FRA 2005 2004Global forest resources assessments have been carried out by FAO since 1947 (FAO, 1948), practically since FAO was formed. The mandate to carry out these assessments stems both from the basic statutes of FAO, and from the decision of the Committee on Forestry (COFO). Global assessment reports have been published at approximately ten year intervals. The latest of these reports, FRA 2000, was published in 2001 (FAO, 2001). The Global Forest Resources Assessment Update for 2005, or FRA 2005, was re quested by COFO 2001 and COFO 2003, where it was recommended that global forest resources assessments should: (a) be carried out at 5 year intervals, (b) be related to international forestry processes and (c) be implemented as a broad based assessment.

Of these assets, the Library is unquestionably the most outstanding and is a lasting record of the Institute's work and its achievement in the field of agriculture. This catalogue will undoubtedly contribute towards a better knowledge of this international Library. This volume in its present form, represents the systematic card-index, by subject of the Brussels Decimal Classification, in French and English, and it's supplemented by the general alphabetical index of authors.
