2002This paper introduces the European Community's Rapid Alert System. It explains the legal basis of the system, the detailed procedures of its application and how the system works. Proposed improvements to the System are discussed, as are the underlying principles for such a communication network. The paper concludes by highlighting further opportunities for agreements with other similar systems, including those developed by third countries or other organizations, and the creation of a network to cover the entire European region. -

No results found.The globalisation of trade in foodstuffs is accelerating as tariff and non-tariff barriers are removed. It is particulary the case in the European Union where the creation of a single market has allowed food to circulate freely throughout the fifteen Member States. The abolition of health controls within the Community's internal borders has given rise to a need for instruments to deal with situations where dangerous products could circulate without any controls. The creation of a rapid alert sys tem is one of these instruments. -
